During the 76-year history of Oregon Tech athletics, multiple student-athletes competed in two sports.  But Mathis was an extremely rare men’s 3-sport athlete, competing for the Owls during the fall for Howard Morris’ football team, the winter with Danny Miles’ basketball team and in the spring with Miles’ baseball team - earning All-Evergreen Conference honors in both football and baseball.
 
· 4-year starter at quarterback for the football team, earning All-Evergreen Conference honors in 1974 and 1977
· Honored as a member of the 1974 All-Little Northwest football team
· Also played defensive back, punted and served as a punt returner - holding the single-season record for punt return average (18.7)
· Member of the 1974 men’s basketball team that won the Evergreen Conference title and became the first OIT team to qualify for the NAIA Championships
· 3-time All-Evergreen Conference selection in baseball
· Holds the all-time OIT record for triples in a career (11) and ranks No. 6 all-time in batting average (.363)
· Hit .404 with a .496 batting average during a banner 1976 season
