OPPONENT PREVIEW – COLLEGE OF IDAHO: Tech closes the regular season with the second meeting of the year against College of Idaho, looking to avenge a series loss to the Yotes (27-17, 18-15 CCC) last month. C of I clinched a spot in the CCC Tournament last weekend with a series sweep vs. Eastern Oregon, improving to 18-6 at home in 2026. The club relies on speed (CCC best 113 stolen bases) to average over seven runs per game, despite a .277 team batting average. Shortstop James Hull (.345 3 HR 36 RBI, 22 SB) is the table setter, with the quartet of catcher Caden Casagrande (.300 4 HR 33 RBI), first baseman Darren Smith (.312 2 HR 27 RBI), outfielder Austin Moon (.331 1 HR 29 RBI) and designated hitter Cody Guy (.301 5 HR 25 RBI) leading the attack. The pitching staff is paced by starters Jackson Cummins (5-2 6.67 ERA), Heath Sasser-Gunson (3-3 3.62 ERA) and Zaylor Brueggeman (2-2 4.79 ERA), with relievers Willy Shirts (6-1 4.76 ERA) and Calvin Euper (2-1 3.46 ERA) leading the team in appearances. C of I won 3-of-4 in the first series this year and holds a 112-51 series lead, but are 2-6 in games at Bocchi Field.
Â
PLAYOFF PICTURE: OIT heads into the C of I series with a Magic Number of three – a combination of wins or Corban losses this weekend at Eastern Oregon equaling three – to clinch a spot in the 5-team Cascade Conference Championships. The Owls can finish as high as the No. 3 seed or be left out of the tournament entirely – depending on the outcome of weekend games. Tech could vault to the No. 3 spot with a sweep of C of I and Bushnell dropping at least two games at UBC (OIT would hold a 3-way tiebreak between the teams); the Owls would be the No. 4 seed with three wins and a UBC sweep over Bushnell; with Tech the No. 5 seed in all other scenarios if the Magic Number is reached. UBC holds a one-game lead on LC State, which hosts Warner Pacific, for the right to host the CCC Championships – with LC owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Â
TOUGH SERIES VS. UBC: The Owls had opportunities last weekend to earn quality wins against a quality opponent – but eventually dropped all four games of a series to league-leading UBC. OIT had command in both Saturday games, holding leads in the ninth inning, while on Sunday, were within one run heading into the ninth inning of the contest. The series did have a suspended game due to darkness (Game 2) – the second-straight season the Owls have had to suspend a game at home (a 2025 game vs. Bushnell was suspended due to rain).
Â
LATE INNING STRUGGLES: The eighth and ninth innings have not been friendly to the Hustlin' Owls this season, as Tech is 19-8 when tied or leading heading into the eighth and 16-5 when tied or leading heading into the ninth inning. The 2026 team is an anomaly, as over the past four seasons, OIT has a combined 93-3 record when taking a lead into the ninth inning – including a 26-2 record in 2025.
Â
BATS STAY HOT VS. QUALITY ARMS: The OIT offense was on full display against UBC – a team that came into the weekend with an ERA ranking among the Top-15 in the NAIA. The Owls became the only team this season to record 4-straight double-digit hit games against the T-Birds, with the squad combining to score 36 runs in the series. Tech will take a streak of 9-straight games with 10-or-more hits into the C of I series.
Â
EDWARDS HAS HUGE WEEK: A big boost from outfielder
Dylan Edwards was key for the Hustlin' Owls, recording five 2-hit games during the week (including Monday's finale vs. Corban). The transfer was 8-for-14 in the series, hitting his second home run of the year and adding five RBI – helping his season batting average jump from .229 to .284.
Â
SHARP BREAKS WALKS RECORD: Tech elevated
Andrew Sharp into the leadoff role against UBC and the senior continued to find his way on base, going 7-for-13 with a double, triple and two RBI, adding five walks. The catcher pushed his season walk total to 42 – No. 8 in the NAIA and the most ever in a single-season by an OIT player. Sharp had his team-leading seventh game with 3-or-more hits, pushing his batting average to .384, No. 3 in the CCC.
Â
MACY EXTENDS HIT STREAK TO 24: Logan Macy continued to hit against UBC, extending a month-long hitting streak to 24 games – the second-longest in program history (
Patrick Barry hit in 37-straight games in 2025). Macy had a monster Game 1 of the series, going 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI and finished the series 6-for-15 with five runs scored and seven RBI. The sophomore sits two hits away from 100 for his OIT career.
Â
ARMS / GLOVES STRUGGLE IN WEEKEND SET: While the bats had a dominant weekend, struggles on the mound and in the field set the Owls back – as Tech surrendered 55 runs and 56 hits in the 4-game series. Tech pitchers combined for 30 walks, eight wild pitches and four hit-by-pitches against the Canadian side, with only two players –
Ezra Oster and
Matthew Peterman – working clean performances (no runs, no hits, no walks). Defensively, OIT committed 15 errors over the four games – including tying a season-high with six errors in Game 3. In 16 games played at Bocchi Field, the Owls have committed a combined 43 errors, while in 30 road games, Tech has just 32 errors.
Â
