KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –
Carson Glavich kept Oregon Tech's postseason hopes alive with the first nine-inning complete game by a Hustlin' Owl since 2021, tossing a 6-hitter in a 5-1 victory over College of Idaho in Game 2 of today's doubleheader at Steen Sports Park.
Following a tough 11-9 loss in the opener, OIT (23-25, 15-20 CCC) snapped a 5-game losing streak with the Game 2 win, while capitalizing on a Corban loss to Eastern Oregon to drop their postseason Magic Number to one – as the Owls need a win or a Corban loss on Sunday to secure a spot in the 5-team CCC Championships.
Glavich was in control throughout his 121-pitch effort – with the only mistake a 2-out RBI single to Cody Guy in the third, with the Yotes (28-18, 19-16) failing to advance a runner to third base the rest of the game. It was the first nine-inning complete game for Tech since Patrick Arman went the distance in a road win at C of I in 2021.
Tech scored first, as
Cal Pickhardt hit a seeing-eye single in the opening inning to plate
Logan Macy from second. With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh, OIT loaded the bases with no outs – getting a walk from
Andrew Sharp to give the hosts the lead and Macy followed with a 2-run single, extending his hit streak to 26 games, to break the game open.
Both
Nick Gimino and
Logan Pontecorvo had two hits for the Owls, with Pete Bacon going 2-for-3 for C of I. Yotes starter Heath Sasser-Gunson got a no-decision, despite throwing six one-run innings, striking out seven.
OIT had a chance for a sweep – but could not hold a late inning lead in Game 1.
Trailing 7-2 in the seventh – the Owls batted around for seven runs, getting 2-run singles from Pontecorvo and
Dylan Edwards, a game-tying sacrifice fly from
Michael O'Daniel and a go-ahead 2-run single from
Nick Gimino.
However, C of I got the big hit they needed in the eighth – a go-ahead 3-run blast from Jack Ryan off the right field scoreboard – to steal the win.
Skye Palmer drove in four runs – including a 2-run double in a 4-run fourth inning, as the Yotes built a 5-0 lead – with Caden Casagrande going 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
Pontecorvo was 4-for-5 and both Edwards and Gimino were 2-for-4 with three RBI in the loss.
The two teams close out the regular-season tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader – with the 14 OIT senior student-athletes to be honored before the twinbill.
