Box Score 2 KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – British Columbia scored five 2-out runs in the ninth inning to stun Oregon Tech, 13-11, in Game 1 of today's Cascade Conference baseball doubleheader at Steen Sports Park.
The T-Birds (30-12, 24-6) followed suit in Game 2, scoring five runs in the ninth inning to take a 16-12 lead – with the contest suspended due to darkness. The game will resume Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with two outs in the top of the ninth and a runner at second for UBC.
Logan Macy hit two home runs and drove in five in the opener for OIT (22-21, 14-16) and extended his hit streak to 22 games in the second game – moving into sole possession of third-place on the Owls all-time hit streak list.
Unfortunately, 12 walks and three hit-by-pitches by four pitchers was the downfall for the hometown nine.
Macy hit his first homer of the game in the first inning, a 2-run blast, helping the Owls take a 3-0 lead. UBC answered with a 5-run second – getting just two hits, one a Kellen Bourne 3-run homer, to grab the lead.
OIT battled back, scoring four in the third – getting an RBI double from
Logan Pontecorvo and RBI singles from
Cal Pickhardt and
Michael O'Daniel in the frame.
UBC got within 9-8 in the seventh on a Kansai Sugimoto single, but O'Daniel robbed David Krahn of a go-ahead 3-run homer, leaping over the centerfield wall to bring the long drive back.
Tech seemingly put the game away in the eighth, as Macy lined a 2-run homer to center, but the bullpen could not close the door. UBC had runners at second and third with two outs, but a walk on a 3-2 pitch was followed by a Braeden Scott 2-run single to cut the deficit to 11-10. On the very next pitch, pinch hitter Calvin Warrillow smashed a 3-run homer over the left field wall to provide the winning margin.
Andrew Sharp had a double and triple, part of a 3-for-4 game, with Macy and Pickhardt each recording three hits. Pontecorvo, O'Daniel and
Dylan Edwards added two hits in the loss.
Oliver Clements had three hits for the T-Birds, part of a 12-hit attack.
UBC led 7-0 in the fourth inning of the suspended game, but OIT used an 8-run fourth to regain the lead. Tech held a 12-11 lead in the ninth, but Bourne hit a 2-run homer to give the T-Birds the lead and following a Krahn 2-run double that was lost in the darkness by the Owls outfield, the game was suspended.
A full recap of Game 2 will be provided following the conclusion.
