Eli Stevens clocked personal best times in both running events and
Ryan Doherty had a career day in every discipline, as the Oregon Tech men's track team competed in Day 1 of the decathlon at the Cascade Conference Championships.
Stevens sits in second place after five events with 3,414 points – trailing only Eastern Oregon's Nathan Wachs (3,583) – who claimed wins in both the long jump and high jump.
Doherty made a splash, posting a career-best 3,308 points through the opening day – including big marks in the 100-meters, high jump and long jump.
Bud Patzke heads into the second day of competition in tenth-place (2,989), with
Bryson Teal in 16th (2,567).
Stevens opened with a time of 11.11 seconds in the 100-meters, the third fastest time in the field and ended the long day by cracking the 50-second barrier for the first time, posting a 49.86-second 400-meters. He added a solid mark of 6.55 meters (21 feet, 6 inches) in the long jump, while posting a 10.30 meter (33 feet, 9 ½ inch) shot put and cleared 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) in the high jump.
Doherty equaled Stevens in the running events, clocking a 11.44-second 100 and placed fourth in the 400 (51.20), but earned key points with a second-place finish in the high jump, thanks to a clearance of 1.85 meters (6-0 ¾). He added a mark of 5.97 meters (19-7) in the long jump and threw the shot 10.78 meters (35-4 ½).
Patzke put up his best numbers in the long jump (6.01 / 19-8 ¾) and in the high jump (1.82 / 5-11 ½), with Teal recording times of 11.72 in the 100 and 55.58 in the 400.
Day 2 will begin with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500-meters.
