2024-25 Women's Basketball Season Review

COMING UP: Season Complete

ANOTHER BIG SEASON: The 2024-25 season continued a great run by the Oregon Tech women's basketball program, as the Lady Owls recorded their third-straight 20-win season, a third-straight trip to the Cascade Conference Tournament semifinals and second-straight trip to the NAIA Championships. Tech finished the year 23-8, including an 18-4 record in conference play – improving to 53-13 in conference games over the past three seasons.

NAIA TOURNAMENT RECAP: A record five teams from the Cascade Conference received bids – with regular-season champ, Southern Oregon, advancing to the national quarterfinals, both College of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State reaching the second round, with Eastern Oregon losing in the first round. Tech traveled to Indianapolis as the No. 6 seed in their quadrant and had a four-point lead in the fourth quarter of their match-up vs. Milligan (Tenn.) – but a 21-4 run by the Buffaloes was the difference, as the Owls dropped an 83-74 first-round decision.

BREAKOUT YEAR FOR SOPHOMORES: Sophomores led the way for the Lady Owls, as All-CCC selections Jozie Ramos and Tatum Schmerbach had huge seasons. Ramos led the club in scoring average (13.7), ranking among the Top-5 in the CCC in field goal percentage (.541) and blocks (39) – recording six games with 20-or-more points, including a 32-point game in a playoff win over Corban. Schmerbach filled the stat sheet throughout the year, averaging 13.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game – ranking No. 2 in the CCC in assist. The point-forward had seven double-doubles, adding five games with 20-or-more points, including 28 points and 10 rebounds in the NAIA Tournament loss to Milligan.

SENIORS CLOSE OUT CAREERS: Three seniors saw their careers end in Indiana, as Maddyson Tull, Kennedy Tull and Alexis Elquist closed out their time with the Lady Owls. Maddyson Tull averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as Tech's top post player off the bench, scoring 12 points in the NAIA Tournament. For her career, the grad student finished No. 6 on the all-time OIT scoring list (1,318) and rebound list (650). Kennedy Tull averaged eight points as a senior, leading the team by making 78% of her field goals, while Elquist earned All-CCC honorable mention honors averaged 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game, recording three games with 15-or-more rebounds and two 20-point games.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN: Two major injuries forced the Lady Owls to reshuffle their line-up during the season – as Olivia Sprague and Gabbie Gascon ended the year as student-assistant coaches. Sprague, a 2-time NAIA All-American, was injured on the first possession of the first game of the year at Northwestern. Gascon was among the candidates for CCC Player of the Year, averaging 12 points, with five rebounds, four assists and three steals a game – before seeing her season ended in late January – but was still named to the All-CCC team. Both players are hopeful to play during the 2025-26 season.

A LOOK BACK AT 2024-25: The Lady Owls scheduled their toughest preseason schedule in program history – including three teams in the Top-25 – dropping back-to-back games in Iowa, including a loss to eventual national champ, Dordt, but rebounding in Arizona to defeat Arizona Christian and topped UC Merced, the CalPac champ by 28 points. Tech tied for second in the CCC regular-season standings – splitting the regular-season series with NAIA Tournament teams in LC State and Eastern Oregon and sweep the series with College of Idaho – with 16 of their 18 league wins by double-digit margins. OIT defeated Corban in the quarterfinals of the CCC Tournament, before tough fourth quarters led to playoff losses to LC State and Milligan.

GAME-SEASON RECORDS: As a team, the Lady Owls tied a single-game record with 70 rebounds, while posting the No. 2 all-time single-game field goal percentage mark (.650) at Multnomah. The squad set a new single-season record for rebound margin (+12.0), the No. 2 mark for field goals made (884) and the No. 3 mark for scoring average (74.1) and field goal attempts (2,015). Individually, Jozie Ramos posted the No. 7 mark for a season in free throw attempts (147), the No. 8 mark for free throws made (102) and No. 9 mark for field goal percentage (.541), with Tatum Schmerbach recording the No. 9 mark for assists (134) in a season.
