INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Jaycie Jenkins scored a game-high 33 points, including seven in a 21-4 fourth quarter run, as Milligan University upset Oregon Tech, 83-74, in the first-round of the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship.
The No. 11-seeded Buffaloes (25-7) will meet No. 3-seed Marian tomorrow with a trip to Sioux City and the tournament final site on the line, while OIT had their season ended.
The Lady Owls (23-8) held a 58-54 lead on a
Maddyson Tull lay-up with nine minutes to play, but MU held Tech to 1-of-11 shooting and forcing three turnovers in the game-changing 7-minute stretch. McKenna Myers hit a 3-pointer and a short jumper, with Jenkins converting a 3-point play and a driving lay-up – as the Tennessee squad flipped the script.
OIT built a double-digit lead early in the second quarter, as a
Chelsea Ching lay-up gave the Lady Owls a 27-16 edge. Jenkins countered with a 3-pointer, as the Buffs rattled off 10-straight points, taking a 39-37 lead late in the period, before a
Kennedy Tull triple at the horn gave the Owls a 42-39 lead at the break.
The two teams would trade the lead five times in the third quarter, setting up the finish.
Tatum Schmerbach had a double-double, scoring a career-high 28 points with 10 rebounds, with Ching scoring a career-high 12. Playing in their final game, the Tull sisters each scored in double-figures –
