2024 Baseball Season Review

COMING UP: Season Complete

POSTSEASON RECAP: The Hustlin' Owls made their third postseason appearance in the last four years in 2024, earning the No. 2 seed in the Cascade Conference Championships. In the opener, Tech held a 3-0 lead through three innings, but British Columbia rallied for eight runs in the fourth through seventh innings and held off a late OIT rally for a 9-8 win. A day later, the Owls were eliminated by LC State, 10-2 – as the Warriors scored 10 runs in the middle innings. Despite being the No. 8-rated team in the West ARC rating, three teams ranked below them were picked for the NAIA National Tournament – with OIT the highest ranked squad to not receive a bid. Three CCC teams – LC State, UBC and Bushnell qualified for Nationals, though none of the teams advanced to the World Series.

HORNER ENDS ALL-AMERICA DROUGHT: Catcher Tyler Horner racked up the hardware in 2024, as the junior was named Cascade Conference Player of the Year, along with a first-team NAIA All-American. Horner becomes the third first-team All-American in program history and the first in 42 years – as Dave Hummel (1974) and Mark Kane (1982) earned the distinction. Ryson Mauricio was the Owls last All-American, earning second-team honors in 2009. The junior narrowly missed out on the league's triple crown – leading the circuit with 16 home runs and 61 RBI, ranking second with a .398 batting average. Horner set the OIT single-season record for total bases (155), tied the single-season school record for home runs (16) and doubles (21), with his RBI total ranking second all-time. Horner was the only CCC player honored and one of only six players from West Coast clubs among the 54 players named to the three All-America lists.

CHAPPLE NAMED PITCHER OF THE YEAR: For just the second time in program history, a Hustlin' Owls pitcher was named CCC Pitcher of the Year – as Bronson Chapple was honored by the league coaches. The junior was dominant – winning nine-straight decisions at one point – tying the single-season school record for wins (9). The right-hander led the CCC in wins and innings pitched, while ranking second in ERA (3.50) and strikeouts (83) – breaking the single-season OIT strikeout mark. Chapple tossed a complete-game 1-hit shutout at Antelope Valley, while striking out 10 batters in a loss to No. 5-ranked Central Methodist.

INFIELDERS EARN ALL-CCC HONORS: The Owls double-play tandem of Patrick Barry and Matthew Ortiz were recognized by the CCC coaches as all-league selections – each for the first time in their careers. Barry had a breakout first season at Tech, hitting .389 with three homers and 38 RBI, adding 27 walks and 17 stolen bases. Ortiz hit .343 on the year with four home runs and 39 RBI, leading the team with 48 runs scored and adding 18 stolen bases.

JONES NAMED GOLD GLOVE PICK: Another great season with the leather helped junior right fielder Julien Jones earn his second-straight CCC Gold Glove award. Jones led all CCC outfielders with nine defensive assists, while hitting .321 at the plate with seven home runs and 47 RBI.

TECH SETS WINS RECORD: Tech closed out the 2024 season with a 34-18 overall record – establishing a new school record for wins in a season. The squad surpassed the previous mark of 33 wins, set in 2009 and 2023 – with the Owls recorded their third-straight 30-win season.

STEEN SUCCESS: The Owls will head into 2025 riding a 6-game home win streak, finishing 2024 with an 12-5 mark at Steen Sports Park. Since OIT moved their home field to the venue off Foothills Drive, the club is a combined 36-16 at home.

LOOKING BACK AT 2024: The 2024 season was a memorable one for the Hustlin' Owls, finishing second in the Cascade Conference regular-season standings (18-6), earning series splits against Division II power Western Oregon and NAIA power Lewis-Clark State, earning a series win for the second-straight year against British Columbia, while sweeping College of Idaho on the road. Tech started the year 0-6 – with all six losses to NAIA Tournament teams, before winning 14-of-17 games – including a string of eight games scoring 8-or-more runs. The Owls had two monster comebacks – rallying from a 12-4 deficit to defeat Western, 13-12, while rallying from a 14-4 deficit at Eastern to win, 17-16. OIT secured their third-straight 30-win season with a home win over Simpson, before closing out the regular-season with a 4-game sweep of Corban. Unfortunately, two tough losses as the CCC Championships knocked Tech from the postseason.

RECORD SETTING YEAR: Multiple single-game, single-season and career records went by the wayside in 2024 – as Matthew Ortiz became the first player with two career 5-hit games (vs. Antelope Valley), Korrey Siracusa set a new OIT and NAIA record by being hit by a pitch four times vs. Eastern Oregon, while both Kellen Mendez (vs. Simpson) and Alonzo Vergara (vs. Eastern Oregon) each tied the school record with two sacrifice flies in a game. Tyler Horner set a new single-season record for total bases (155) and tied the mark for doubles (21) and homers (16), Bronson Chapple set a new record with 83 strikeouts and tied the all-time wins record (9), with Kyle Norton tying the single-season stolen base record (31). As a team, Tech set new single-season records for on-base percentage (.414), runs scored (409), triples (19), RBI (361), sacrifice flies (44), stolen bases (148), wins (34) and fielding percentage (.966). Seven new career records were established – as Patrick Arman holds the mark for wins (22), pitching starts (50), innings pitched (323.3) and strikeouts (245), Ortiz holds the sacrifice flies record (14), Siracusa tied the hit-by-pitch record (39), with Horner establishing the new total bases record (358).

ACADEMIC HONORS: A total of 12 players were named to the NAIA Scholar-Athlete team – Drake Aboud, Patrick Arman, Dane Bradshaw, Riley Cronin, Jaden Domingsel, Cody Dubray, Justin Francis, Chase Hedani, Tyler Horner, Ryan Poling, Kage Southern and Ka'ala Tam. Five others – Landon Cheney, Hunter Hough, Julien Jones, Korrey Siracusa and Chase Southern – joined the previous 12 as members of the Cascade Conference All-Academic Team, while both Arman and Horner were named to the Academic All-District 4 team by the College Sports Communicators.

THANK YOU SENIORS: Seven seniors have played their final game in an OIT jersey – pitchers Patrick Arman, Cody Dubray, Ryan Poling and Collin Brougham, outfielders Kage Southern and Matthew Lehrbach, along with first baseman Kellen Mendez have completed their eligibility with the Owls.

LOOKING AHEAD: Tech will feature their most experienced roster in program history in 2025, as 21 seniors are expected to be in uniform for the Hustlin' Owls. All eight everyday position players are expected back, with the club also returning starting pitchers Bronson Chapple and Isaac Hill, along with key relievers in Tim Williams, Riley Cronin and Brian McClelland.
