OPPONENT PREVIEW – PROVIDENCE: The three match homestand opens Friday against the University of Providence, as the Argos (1-10, 0-8 CCC) are much better than their record indicates – as the club was forced to forfeit multiple matches (including a win over Warner Pacific) due to usage of an ineligible player. UP averages 1.82 goals per game – but have tallied just four first half goals – while the club is surrendering 2.45 goals a day. Key offensive options for the Argos are Tomeu Nebot-Schmalfe (6 goals, 3 assists), Jose Gonzalez (2 goals, 1 assist), Vincent Stoppel (2 goals, 1 assist) and Bryan Olivera (2 goals), with Teddy Benbow (2.64 GAA, .600 save pct) the top keeper. It is the tenth all-time meeting, with OIT holding a 5-4 series edge, including four-straight wins – the past two by identical 6-0 scores.
Â
OPPONENT PREVIEW – CARROLL: Saturday marks a rematch of the 2023 Cascade Conference Tournament quarterfinals, as Tech hosts Carroll College – the squad the Owls defeated last November in an overtime thriller, 3-1. The Fighting Saints (7-2-3, 6-1-1) entered last week the No. 1 ranked team in the NAIA West ARC, but had a 9-match unbeaten streak (and an 8-match shutout streak) snapped in a road loss at College of Idaho, followed by a draw at Eastern Oregon. Carroll has outscored teams 28-7, thanks to the play of Felix Billard (10 goals, 2 assists), Alfie Snow (6 goals, 4 assists), Justus Hermann (2 goals, 2 assists) and Michal Mojzis (1 goal, 3 assists), with keeper Juan Muniz Navarette (0.48 GAA) leading the league with eight shutouts. OIT has a 4-match unbeaten streak on the line vs. the Saints, with the Owls holding a 4-3-2 series edge.
Â
2,000-MILES EQUALS FOUR POINTS: Arguably the most difficult trip for both OIT and Southern Oregon is the Walla Walla-Rocky Mountain swing – as the teams need to both drive and fly to traverse the 2,000-mile exodus. For the Owls, the long trek was fruitful, as Tech earned four points on the road – a 3-1 win at Walla Walla and a 1-1 draw at Rocky Mountain. At WWU, the Owls scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take control, while at Rocky,
Lennyn Solis stole an errant clearance inside the final six minutes, made a nifty run, and ripped a 25-yard shot inside the right post for the equalizer. For OIT, the draw at RMC extended an unbeaten streak in Montana to six matches, dating back to 2019.
Â
PASANG SETS SCORING MARK: Forward
Andrew Pasang hit a milestone with his brace in the win over Walla Walla, establishing the OIT career record for goals scored and points scored with his second goal of the match. The senior tied
Brock Rideout's goals record by burying a second half 25-yard free kick and surpassed both of Rideout's marks with a key insurance goal midway through the period. For his Hustlin' Owls career, Pasang now has 28 goals scored and 75 total points – needing one assist to tie Rideout's career mark of 20, established last season.
Â
FRESHMAN IN THE GOAL COLUMN: True freshman
Anthony Aguiar has seen increased playing time over the past three weeks – including his first career start against College of Idaho. Aguiar-Casillas came up big in Friday's 3-1 road win at Walla Walla, knocking home the go-ahead goal off a short touch from
Ben Bradshaw. He became the tenth different player to score a goal for the Hustlin' Owls this season and the third freshman to find the net – joining
Cash Cota and
Merrick Tambio.
Â
IRON MEN: The duo of
Cooper Hunt and
Ryan Solis each played all 90 minutes in the matches vs. C of I and Eastern – continuing their streak of minutes played this season to 1,170. Four others have played at least 1,000 minutes in 2024 –
Bridger Meyer (1,164),
Andrew Pasang (1,019),
Lennyn Solis (1,016) and
Sylver Schweiger (1,011).
Â
PLAYING AT HOME: Since the OIT Soccer Field was transitioned from natural grass to an artificial turf surface in 2017, the Owls have posted a 39-11-5 record on their own pitch. Since 2020, Tech has dominated foes, recording a 30-6-4 home record, including a 3-1-1 mark this year.
Â
HOME SHUTOUT STREAK CONTINUES: The Owls take a school-record 26-match scoring streak on their own field into the weekend games with Providence and Carroll. The last home shutout of Tech occurred in 2021, a 1-0 loss to Southern Oregon.
Â
MCMANAMON CLOSING IN: Head coach
Sean McManamon heads into weekend play with a career record of 30-13-9 – the second-most wins in program history. The third-year skipper sits two victories away from setting a new OIT men's soccer coaching wins record, as Matt Munhall won 31 games from 2012-18.
Â
AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Both Southern Oregon and College of Idaho posted 2-0 records last week – SOU earning road wins over Rocky and Walla Walla, with C of I winning at home vs. Carroll and Providence. Southern and Carroll meet Friday in a first-place showdown, with three points separating the two teams in the table, while Eastern Oregon hosts C of I with third-place on the line. Other match-ups this weekend include Corban and Bushnell traveling to Multnomah and Warner Pacific, with Rocky and Walla Walla off to Northwest and Evergreen State.
Â
