2026 Baseball Notebook (Week 10)

COMING UP: vs. Corban (DH), Saturday, 12 p.m.; vs. Corban (DH), Sunday, 11 a.m.

GAME DAY INFORMATION: Live Stats of all games will be available through OIT's SIDEARM Stats Portal, with all remaining Cascade Conference games to be carried live on the Urban Edge Network with Mike Safford on the call.

NOTE SERIES FORMAT: The 4-game series will feature three Cascade Conference counting games, with Game 4 a non-conference contest. The two teams originally were supposed to play this series in Klamath in February, with the games shifted to the Valley due to rain – with this weekend's series supposed to be at Corban. The first series had four counting CCC games (same as the series Corban was supposed to originally host), with this series matching the original Basin schedule.

OPPONENT PREVIEW – CORBAN: Tech is looking for a series sweep of Corban to secure a key tiebreak in the CCC standings, as the Warriors (13-25, 9-17 CCC) took 3-of-4 games between the teams in February – holding the Owls to just two runs in their three wins. Corban has a 9-6 record on their own diamond, but just 4-18 on the road and head into the series dropping 13 of their last 15 contests. First baseman Peyton Rickard (.353 1 HR 19 RBI, 0-1 2.45 ERA, 2 saves) leads an offense hitting .264 as a team and ranking among the league leaders with 82 stolen bases – but the Warriors have a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and have a .954 fielding percentage. Third baseman JC Klee (.306 0 HR 15 RBI) and outfielders Lucas Mertlich (.277 4 HR 25 RBI) and Chase Elliott (.298 2 HR 12 RBI, 22 SB) key the attack. Starters Jack Kovanen (3-6 5.77 ERA) and Robert Hays (2-5 6.38 ERA) each beat OIT in February, with two-way player Isaac Bateman (2-5 8.92 ERA, .248 1 HR 29 RBI) and reliever Eddie Gould (1-0 4.50 ERA, 1 save) key arms. The Owls hold a 94-75 series lead.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Lewis-Clark State took control of the top spot and potential host site for the CCC Championships with a series win over British Columbia, while College of Idaho is a game clear of Bushnell for third in the series, while Bushnell sits a game ahead of the Owls. Tech holds a 3-game lead on Corban for the fifth and final postseason spot, with both Eastern and Warner Pacific trailing the Warriors. Following the final three regular-season series, the Top-5 teams in the standings will meet at the regular-season champ for the league tournament.

ARC RATING: For the first time the season, OIT joined the West ARC rating, which helps determine at-large bids to the NAIA Championships, coming in at No. 12. Six other opponents are in rating – No. 2 LC State, No. 4 UBC, No. 5 OUAZ, No. 8 C of I, No. 9 Bushnell and No. 10 The Master's.

SUCCESS AT HOME: The weekend games mark just the third home series of the season, with Tech 3-5 in games at Steen Sports Park. Since the Owls moved to the facility off Foothills Drive in 2022, the club has posted a 57-23 overall record, including a 18-2 mark in 2025.

SERIES WIN IN THE METRO: Tech hit the road for the final time in the regular-season, earning a key series victory at Warner Pacific. The Hustlin' Owls earned a key 3-2 victory in the series opener, before erupting for a 10-run eighth inning in Game 2 – the most runs scored in an inning since 2015 (11 at La Sierra on Feb. 6) – claiming a 15-4 win. OIT squandered leads of 5-0, 6-5 and 8-6 in Game 3, as WPU hit an 11th inning walk-off homer to earn their lone win, before the Owls rallied in Game 4, scoring four runs in the eighth inning for a 9-6 win.

ARMS CARRY OWLS: Pitching was the key in Portland, as the Owls received multiple quality performances on the hill. Landon Cheney and Caleb Randolph combined for the Game 1 win, Cheney going five-plus innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out five, with Randolph getting his third save after getting the final 10 outs. Carson Glavich earned his second straight win in Game 2, allowing four runs and fanning six in six innings, with Crew Howell earning a save with two shutout innings. Kaden Melzer had his best performance of the year in Game 3, allowing one run and two hits in five innings of work; Marcos Ulloa-Ford tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in Game 4, with Noah Loew earning the win after tossing three strong innings, holding WPU to one hit.

PATIENCE AT THE PLATE: The Owls showed discipline in the batters box, combining for 30 walks and five hit by pitches in the 4-game series. Tech leads the CCC with 194 walks drawn on the season, helping the club to a .405 team on-base percentage.

MACY STRETCHES STREAK TO 17: Shortstop Logan Macy extended a career-best hitting streak to 17 games during the WPU series, going 7-for-20 with five runs scored and five RBI in the set. The sophomore has reached base in 25-straight games and added two doubles in Portland – pushing his season total to 14, ranking third in the CCC.

ROMAN GETS ON: Leadoff man Jojo Roman continued to find a way on the base paths – going 5-for-18 with six runs scored, adding four walks and two stolen bases in the weekend series. The junior extended his hit-streak to 13 games and has recorded a hit in 16 of the 17 games he has been penciled into the lead off slot.

CLUTCH HITS FROM PICKHARDT: The Owls continued to get key hits from third baseman Cal Pickhardt, who leads the club with 34 RBI – ranking No. 6 in the CCC. The transfer had four hits in the WPU series but scored five runs and led the team with seven RBI in the four games. Pickhardt leads Tech with 10 multi-RBI games.

WALKS RECORD IN JEOPARDY: Andrew Sharp continues to reach base in over 50% of his plate appearances, walking six times in the WPU series. Sharp leads the CCC and ranks No. 12 in the NAIA with 34 walks on the season – just five free passes away from Tyler Horner's school record of 39.

AROUND THE CONFERENCE: All four series in the CCC had teams winning 3-of-4 games as LC State (over UBC), C of I (over Corban) and Bushnell (over Eastern) joined Tech with series victories. This weekend, C of I heads to UBC, LC makes the short trip to EOU, with Bushnell off to Warner Pacific.
