CALDWELL, Idaho – Oregon Tech got 5-hit days from
JoJo Roman and
Quinn Mickelson, but the offense wasn't enough, as College of Idaho rallied for two close wins to claim the 4-game weekend series at Wolfe Field.
The Hustlin' Owls (12-10, 5-5 CCC) had leads in both ends of the doubleheader, but the Coyotes battled back for 6-5 and 6-3 victories.
Mickelson had his first 3-hit game for Tech in Game 1, while Roman was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
OIT started fast in the opener – loading the bases with no outs – but settled for a Roman run on a wild pitch and a 2-run double from
Thomas Smith. However, the Yotes (15-5, 6-3) answered with a 4-run third, capped by a go-ahead 2-run homer from Medford Rogues catcher Casen Casagrande.
The Owls came right back, regaining the lead in the fourth on a
Cal Pickhardt homer – but were unable to scratch across another run – leaving runners in scoring position in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings.
C of I used small ball in the seventh to tie the game and scored the game-winner in the eighth on a James Hull single.
Noah Loew got a no-decision, allowing one earned run in three-plus innings, with
Caleb Randolph allowing one run in three innings, striking out four.
Tech scored first in Game 2, as
Andrew Sharp singled,
Logan Macy doubled and
Jacob Cook plated a run with a ground out for a first inning 1-0 lead. C of I tallied two in the bottom half, as a Skye Palmer double gave the Yotes the edge.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, OIT got even on a Macy sacrifice fly and a Mickelson single, but the Coyotes answered with two in their half of the fifth, as a CJ Hunter double giving the hosts the lead for good.
Macy finished 2-for-4 with a double in the Game 2 loss, with
Josh Mejia striking out five in relief.
OIT finally returns home next weekend, making their Bocchi Field debut against No. 12-ranked Lewis-Clark State.
