KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Luis Barreto pushed up from his centerback spot for a rare hat trick, as Carroll College capitalized on set pieces to claim a 4-1 victory over Oregon Tech at the OIT Soccer Field.
The Fighting Saints (4-2-3, 3-1-1 CCC) took advantage of 17 corner kicks on the day, converting a pair into goals, while adding a third on a penalty. The visitors finished the contest with a 21-11 edge in shots.
Hustlin' Owls (3-3-5, 1-3-1) keeper
Noah Harwood did all he could to keep Tech in the match, making seven saves, including two shots from inside the 6-yard-box in the second half while it was a one-score game.
Barreto got Carroll on the board just before halftime, as off a corner, Nils Benning played a ball to the front of the box, where Sam Loughton headed ball to the back post – where Barreto headed home the volley for the 1-0 lead.
Daniel Jones made it 2-0 early in the second half, driving home a low shot off a pretty through-ball from Pedro Teixeira.
OIT answered quickly, as
Sammy Villalta played a 58th minute cross into the middle of the box, where
Merrick Tambio headed home the winner. The Owls nearly tied it in the 74th minute, as a header from
Yahir Ramos missed right of the target.
However, the set pieces proved to be the Saints tonic, as Barreto again scored off a Benning corner in the 78th minute and capped the 3-goal match with a 82nd minute penalty kick.
Carroll finished with a 21-11 edge in total shots.
The Owls will look to stop a 3-match losing streak on Saturday at Providence.
