Schmidt Strikes Out 19, Lady Owls Take Two from Warner

MILWAUKIE, Ore. – Jayce Seavert had a 4-hit day and Kacie Schmidt combined to strike out 19 batters in two victories, as Oregon Tech swept a doubleheader at Warner Pacific with 5-1 and 4-1 victories at Milwaukie High.

The Lady Owls (32-6, 16-4 CCC) moved within two games of first place in the league standings with the two victories.

Schmidt dominated the Knights (9-26, 6-14) in Game 1, striking out a career-high 14 batters – limiting the hosts to just three hits in the complete game victory.

OIT took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Seavert hit a sacrifice fly to score Nita Cook, with Zoe Allen scoring on the play due to a WP error.

The Knights would cut the deficit to 2-1 on a fourth inning solo homer by Hailey Ferguson – but Schmidt did not allow a runner into scoring position the rest of the game.

Tech added insurance runs in the late innings – as an Allen squeeze bunt and a Seavert RBI double gave the Owls a 4-1 lead in the fifth, while in the seventh, Gina Allen made it 5-1 with a RBI single.

Zoe Allen, Seavert and Addison Kachnik all had two hits in the victory.

The nightcap started with a big bang, as Puakea Milbourne launched a first inning 3-run homer to stake Tech to an early lead. WP cut the margin to 3-1 in the third on a Nikki O'Reilly RBI double, but the Owls turned to Schmidt out of the pen to get out of the inning – tossing four-plus innings of no-hit relief, striking out five.

OIT had chances throughout to add to the lead – stranding 10 runners in the game – finally scoring a sixth inning run on a WP error.

Seavert was 2-for-4 and Milbourne had two hits for the Owls.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
