GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Freshman
Leah Huffman had five hits on the day and sophomore
Gina Allen drove in seven runs, as No. 2-ranked Oregon Tech completed a 4-game sweep of the University of Providence with 12-1 and 15-3 wins at Highland Park.
The Lady Owls (12-3, 4-2 CCC) extended their win streak to five games heading into the highly anticipated series next weekend at No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon.
OIT scored in nine of the 10 innings played – using a 7-run fifth inning in Game 1 and an 8-run fourth inning in Game 2 to invoke the mercy rule.
In the opener,
Kacie Schmidt fanned nine, taking a perfect game into the fifth – settling for a 2-hitter in the complete game effort.
Tech scored single runs in the first three innings – a
Puakea Milbourne RBI single in the first, a
Nita Cook sacrifice fly in the second and a run in the third during a 2-out run down.
Allen made it 5-0 in the fourth, drilling a one-hopper off the glove of the third baseman for a 2-run single, while an inning later, the Lady Owls batted around – taking advantage of two errors, three walks, a hit-by-pitch – while getting a Huffman RBI single and an
Addison Kachnik 2-run double.
Huffman, making her first collegiate start, was 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Tech.
Big hits were the key in Game 2 – as Milbourne started the party with a first inning RBI single. After the Argos (5-7, 2-4) took a lead in the bottom of the inning on a Olivia Roe single, Tech responded in the second with 2-run singles from both Allen and Milbourne to regain the lead.
Malia Mick pushed the lead to 7-2 in the third with a 2-run double, while in the fourth,
Jazmine Macias gapped a bases-clearing double, Cook had a bloop RBI single and Allen capped the day with a long 3-run homer to left.
Allen was 3-for-4 with five RBI, Milbourne was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Kachnik finished 2-for-3, with Huffman going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Alli Parker worked four innings, striking out five, to earn the victory.
