Tech Drops Pair to UBC in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, B.C. – British Columbia combined to hit four home runs on the day, while taking advantage of a bad hop, 2-run single to break a tie in the nightcap to sweep a twinbll from Oregon Tech at Tourmaline West Park.

The T-Birds (14-8, 9-2 CCC) ran their win streak to 8-straight with the 7-4 and 9-6 victories.

Russell Yip and Kaden Zarowny hit home runs in a 3-run second inning outburst in the opener, giving the hosts an early lead. The Owls (15-7, 6-5) trimmed the margin to 3-2 in the third on an RBI single from Tyler Horner and a Matthew Ortiz sacrifice fly, but UBC got the runs back in their half of the frame on a long Mitchell Middlemiss 2-run blast.

OIT would try to chip away, getting with 6-4 following a Horner run-scoring double and a Keanu Mizuta solo homer – but were unable to get closer.

Horner finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and Korrey Siracusa had two hits and scored three runs in the loss. Zawrony was 3-for-4 with four RBI for the T-Birds.

Tech rallied in the nightcap – using a 3-run seventh inning – to grab a 4-3 lead. Ortiz and Julien Jones lined RBI singles, with a Mizuta sacrifice fly giving OIT the edge.

Unfortunately for the Owls, UBC tied the score on a two-out bases loaded passed ball and following a walk, Middlemiss hit a grounder to third that hit the bag – turning into a go-ahead bad-hop 2-run single, with Yip following with a 2-run double to break the game open.

Ortiz was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Jones added two hits for Tech. OIT shortstop Patrick Barry extended his record hitting streak to 37 games with a single in Game 1, but saw the streak snapped with an 0-for-4 effort in Game 2.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
