CHICKASHA, Okla. –
Kacie Schmidt tossed a 2-hit shutout and
Sawyer Stenson hit a walk-off 2-run homer, helping Oregon Tech blank Freed-Hardeman, 9-0, on Day 1 of the NAIASB Invitational.
Due to field conditions in Shawnee, Okla., Tech's game vs. Campbellsville was canceled, with their late game moved to the campus of Science & Arts – played in below freezing temperatures.
The cold didn't bother the Lady Owls (3-0) – limiting the Lions to just two base runners behind Schmidt, who struck out nine batters to earn her 19th shutout win.
OIT scored single runs in each of the first two innings – as
Nita Cook walked, stole second and scored on a
Zoe Allen RBI single in the first inning, with
Marla Goodspeed doubling and scoring on a
Malia Mick single in the second.
The Owls won the game in the fifth – batting around for seven runs.
Addison Kachnik rapped a 2-run single,
Gina Allen plated a run on a ground out, with Goodspeed following with a 2-out, 2-run double. Stenson closed the game with a line drive 2-run blast, her first in an OIT uniform.
Goodspeed had the lone multi-hit game for the Owls, going 2-for-3, with Cook stealing a pair of bags.
Kylee Brown took the loss for FHU (4-1), allowing eight hits and striking out three.
OIT continues play tomorrow with games against No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City and No. 15-ranked Midland.
