KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Head coach
Justin Parnell celebrated his 200th career victory in style, as Oregon Tech recorded the most efficient 3-point shooting night in three decades, dominating Northwest University, 98-65, at Danny Miles Court.
The tenth-year head coach improved his all-time record to 200-81 – surpassing Danny Miles as the fastest OIT head coach to 200 wins, as Parnell's predecessor needed 295 games to reach the milestone mark.
"You can't win 200 games without outstanding players and coaches," Parnell said. "Paul Poetsch has been by my side for nearly every win – there is no way we could have won 200 games without him. Mitch Fink has done it all – as a player and as a coach – and is a huge part of it. But above all, our culture is the key – both on and off the court – and that has translated into wins and that makes this so special."
The Owls (7-3, 2-0 CCC) made their first eight 3-point attempts, finishing the evening 13-for-20 from long range – with the 65% shooting clip the best (with a minimum of 10 made 3's) by an OIT since the 3-point line was moved back in 2008 and the best performance since making 67% of their attempts vs. Western Oregon in 1995 (with the 3-point line at 19 feet, 9 inches).
OIT trailed just once, at 2-0, but used a 65% shooting half to methodically build a 47-31 halftime lead – knocking down all five of their first half 3-point chances.
The offense continued to roll after the break, as
Gylan Payne converted a corner 3-pointer and a 3-point play and
Colby Whicker drained back-to-back 3's – as the Owls made their first seven shots in the second half, part of a 16-3 run that extended the lead to 63-34.
The Hustlin' Owls continued the onslaught, rattling off 14-straight points – including consecutive 3's from Payne,
Dakota Reber and
Grant Tull – pushing the margin to 89-47.
Reber capped a monster weekend with his second straight 20-10 game, recording 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while Payne added 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting – becoming the 11th OIT player to make 8-or-more field goals in a game without a miss.
Tull scored a career-high 16 points, making 4-of-6 3-point attempts, with
Jackson Cooper scoring 14 points with eight rebounds.
The Eagles (2-6, 0-2) were held to 5-of-35 shooting from 3-point range in the loss, with Christian Watkins leading NU with 18 points and a game-high four steals.
OIT will have the next 13 days off for Finals Week, preparing for a Dec. 19 match-up vs. Bushnell.
