LEWISTON, Idaho – For the second time this season, freshman
Cayson VanBeekum tied an Oregon Tech school record with a 7-under-par 65, helping the Hustlin' Owls to a Day 1 lead at the Lewis-Clark State Fall Invitational.
Competing on the par-72 track at Lewiston Country Club, VanBeekum recorded eight birdies on the day – becoming the first OIT player with two 7-under-par rounds. The first-year player holds a 4-stroke lead on Lucas Rynearson of College of Idaho and Stephen Paull of Spokane CC.
Tech took advantage of the quality round from VanBeekum to end the day at 2-under-par, with their 286 team score three shots ahead of C of I (289) and five shots ahead of host LC State (291).
Two Hustlin' Owls are in the Top-10 – as
Silas Guzlas carded an even-par 72, sitting in fifth, while
Jack Tieman was tied for eighth after an opening round 73.
Issey Tanimura (76) and
Kade Bracken (77) closed out the OIT scoring fivesome.
The second and final round is set for a Tuesday 9 a.m. shotgun start.
