Tech Opens Road Trip with Saturday Sweep at C of I

CALDWELL, Idaho – Keanu Mizuta lined a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie in Game 1, paving the way for an Oregon Tech sweep of College of Idaho at Wolfe Field.

The Hustlin' Owls (19-11, 5-1 CCC) bullpen shut the door in a 3-2 victory in the opener, while solid pitching from Bronson Chapple and Ryan Poling led OIT to an 8-3 win in Game 2. Tech extended their win streak to five, earning wins in 12 of their last 14 games.

"I thought we executed on the mound and played great defense in key moments," said OIT head coach Jacob Garsez. "Our offense continues to be tough with two outs. Am excited to get back at it tomorrow, but we need to clean some things up."

In Game 1, the Owls took a 2-0 lead in the third, as Matthew Ortiz broke the stalemate with an RBI single, eventually scoring on a C of I throwing error.

The Yotes (9-17, 0-2) pulled even in the fourth on a Darren Smith 2-out, 2-run single.

Tech starter Patrick Arman kept C of I at bay, working seven strong innings, striking out seven. His offense gave the right-hander the lead in the eighth, as Kyle Norton was hit by a 2-out pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, with Mizuta plating him with a base-hit to right.

C of I had chances in their final two at bats – putting runners at first and second in both the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, Norton threw out the potential tying run at home to end the inning, while in the ninth, Williams fanned pinch-hitter Daniel Iwamizu to close out the game – logging his third save.

Mizuta, Patrick Barry and Brady Culp had two hits for Tech, with Kris Kirkpatrick going 3-for-3 for the Coyotes.

Game 2 was mired by an hour-long lightning delay in the fifth inning – halting a stellar start by Chapple, who held C of I to one run – striking out seven. Poling entered and got the final 14 outs for the win, holding the Yotes to five hits and striking out four.

OIT broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, as Alonzo Vergara lifted a sacrifice fly, Ortiz and Norton each recorded RBI infield singles, with Tyler Horner extending the lead to 5-1 with an RBI ground out.

The Owls put the game away with a 2-run eighth, including an RBI double from Norton.

Norton was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Ortiz was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the victory – as all nine OIT starters had at least one hit.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. (MDT) doubleheader.
