MEDFORD, Ore. – Wolfgang Alvardo lined a 20-yard strike into the right corner of the net midway through the first overtime period, as Oregon Tech upset Southern Oregon, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, at Lithia & Driveway Fields.
The Hustlin' Owls (9-7-3) will meet top-seed Carroll College in the semifinal round on Tuesday, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
After a physical 90 minutes, Tech earned the win on a counter-attack, as
Cannon Spooner made a long run down the left side, playing a cross to the top of the box – finding the hard-charging Alvarado, who hammered the one-timer into the net for the Golden Goal.
Tech opened the scoring in the seventh minute, as a
Merrick Tambio shot was blocked by Raiders (12-5-2) keeper Casey Ruvolo, but
Arthur Proost collected the rebound, touching a pass to an unmarked
Kevin Rodriguez, who slotted home the counter.
SOU had a 19-10 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in corners – but the OIT defense was stout until the 60th minute, as Sky Charley-Boylard played a ball to the middle of the box, finding the boot of Evan Norconk, touching the one-timer into the upper right-corner of the net.
Both teams had chances late in regulation, but Ruvalo turned away a header by Proost and OIT keeper
Ryan Solis stopped a low 25-yard dart from Mustafa Daggig.
