LINCOLN, Calif. – Opening Day did not go as planned for Oregon Tech, as the Hustlin' Owls stranded the tying runners on base to end both contests, as Jessup swept a Friday doubleheader at McBean Park.
Division II transfer Trey Furrey hit three home runs and drove in 10, as the Warriors (2-0) earned 11-8 and 7-6 victories, clubbing a combined six home runs on the afternoon.
OIT (0-2) had chances – rallying from a 5-0 deficit in the second inning of Game 1 and battling back from a 7-4 hole in Game 2 – but couldn't get the clutch hit to prolong the game.
After Furrey ripped a grand slam to stake the hosts to the big Game 1 lead, the Hustlin' Owls chipped away at the deficit.
Alonzo Vergara hit a 2-run homer in the fourth to cut the margin to 5-2, adding an RBI triple in the seventh to pull the visitors within 9-6. Trailing 11-7 in the ninth, Tech loaded the bases and scored a run on a
Julien Jones bases loaded walk, but left they tying run at first.
Vergara,
Tyler Horner and
Korrey Siracusa all had 2-for-5 games, while
Kyle Norton had two hits, including an eighth inning homer – part of an 11-hit attack. However, four OIT pitchers combined to walk 11 JU batters in the loss.
Tech had leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in Game 2 – as Horner golfed a 2-run first inning home run, while in the third, an RBI single from Jones and an RBI triple from Horner gave the Owls a 2-run lead. Furrey answered with a 2-run shot in the third and an inning later, lined a 2-run single that gave the Warriors a 7-4 lead. OIT got within 7-6 in the sixth on a Norton sacrifice fly – but stranded the tying run on base in the final inning.
Jones was 3-for-4 in the Game 2 loss, with
Matthew Ortiz, Horner and Vergara all recording multi-hit games.
Riley Cronin tossed two shutout innings of relief for Tech, striking out four.
The two teams complete the weekend series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
