2023 Women's Soccer Notebook (Week 10)

COMING UP: vs. Northwest, Sunday, 2:30 p.m.; vs. Evergreen State, Monday, 2:30 p.m.

GAME DAY INFORMATION: Both weekend match-ups will be carried live on the Owls Sports Network with Mike Safford on the call. Live Stats will also be available via OIT's SIDEARM Stats Portal. For fans making the trip to the Klamath Basin, admission to all soccer games is free.

MULTIMEDIA: All photos from the 2023 season will be posted online via the OIT Women's Soccer Flickr Page, while highlight clips and interviews will be posted online via the new OIT Women's Soccer YouTube Channel.

NOTE THE SCHEDULE: Games this weekend will be Sunday-Monday, instead of the traditional Friday-Saturday match-ups. OIT's travel partner, Southern Oregon, has staffing issues due to hosting home football, volleyball and soccer – with the Cascade Conference mandating games be played consecutively (without a break between) – forcing the games to be pushed back 48 hours.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT – NORTHWEST: Sunday's match will pit the last two CCC champions, as Northwest claimed the 2022 tournament title – a year removed from OIT's title run. The Eagles (8-5-2, 6-2-2 CCC) shook off a slow start, as the team had to replace six All-CCC performers – with the squad recording just one loss in their last eight matches. NU is defensively sound, allowing just 15 goals on the year – thanks to keepers Kia Schwartz (0.77 GAA, 39 saves, .886 S%) and Ella Wilson (1.18 GAA, 48 saves, .828 S%), along with All-CCC defender Halley Marshall. Offensively, the trio of Grace VanAssche (5 goals, 8 assists), Grace Burke (4 goals) and Colette Liston (3 goals, 1 assist) lead the Eagles.

HISTORY VS. THE EAGLES: The Owls and Northwest have met 22 previous times, with OIT holding a slim 11-10-1 series lead – including a 7-match unbeaten streak. Tech has won 5-of-8 matches in the Basin, while the two teams played last season to a 0-0 draw in Washington.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT – EVERGREEN STATE: The regular-season ends Monday against Evergreen State, as the Geoducks (2-9-2, 2-7-1) head into the weekend mathematically alive for the final CCC postseason berth. Offense has been the issue for the Washington school, as teams have outscored the Geoducks, 31-10, including a 217-69 shot deficit. Returning All-CCC midfielder Brieanna Dell (2 goals, 1 assist) is the key to the TESC offense, along with Peyton Rhyne (4 goals) and Eden Comstock (1 goal, 2 assists). The Geoducks share time in goal, with both Amity Brookshire (2.55 GAA, 51 saves, .739 S%) and Anna Varela (2.69 GAA, 50 saves, .794 S%) starting matches.

HISTORY VS. THE GEODUCKS: The two teams have met 25 times on the pitch, with the Lady Owls holding a 15-9-1 series edge, including six consecutive wins – including last season's 3-2 victory in Olympia, Wash. OIT and TESC have played 13 times in Klamath Falls, with Tech winning 9-of-12 matches and one ending in a draw.

MAGIC NUMBER LESS THAN ONE: The Lady Owls head into the final weekend of the regular-season with a 4-4-2 league record – the 14 points in the table tying OIT with Bushnell for sixth-place. Tech can clinch a spot in the 8-team Cascade Conference Championships with a win or draw in one of their final two matches, or a draw or loss by Multnomah and Warner Pacific. College of Idaho has already clinched the regular-season crown and one of two automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships.

PLAYOFF HISTORY: OIT is searching for their 13th all-time postseason berth and their seventh in a row, including 11 trips to the CCC Championships and three trips to the NAIA National Championships. The Owls are 10-12-3 all-time in playoff games, including a 5-9-2 mark in CCC Tournament games.

HUGE WIN IN ASHLAND: The Lady Owls ran a win streak to two matches with a huge 2-1 victory on Friday evening at rival Southern Oregon, scoring the winning goal inside the final eight minutes. It marked OIT's first win at SOU since the 2013 season – the fifth all-time victory at Raider Stadium, with all five victories by a 1-goal margin.

HIGH CALIBER FINISHES: Both OIT goals in the win over Southern Oregon were tactical – as Brianna Lewis scored her third goal of 2023 and Shalynai Naputi's second goal of the year providing the winning margin. A 50-yard run up the left side of the pitch by Ashley Hart, followed by a cross to the back post found a sliding Lewis, who touched home the opening score. With a tie score late in the match, Kayla Ness took a long pass in the right corner and played an angled pass to Naputi, who buried a 20-yard dart into the upper-left corner of the net.

DEFENSE THE KEY: The Owls allowed just one goal in the win at SOU – the tenth time OIT has surrendered one goal or fewer – improving to 5-2-3 in those contests.

LEAGUE LEADERS: As a team, the Lady Owls have committed the fewest fouls per game (6.23) in the Cascade Conference, ranking No. 5 in shutouts (5) and goals against average (1.00), No. 8 in total shots (11.92) and No. 9 in both goals per game (1.08) and assists per game (0.69). Individually, Sydni Nakamura is No. 2 in shutouts (5) and No. 7 in goals against average (1.00), Kiana Jacobson is No. 5 in game winning goals (2) and No. 9 in goals scored (5), with Shalynai Naputi No. 6 in shots per game (2.85).

AROUND THE CASCADE CONFERENCE: The final week (and a half) of the league season starts Friday and Saturday – as Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho head to Warner Pacific and Multnomah, Corban and Bushnell travel to Rocky Mountain, while Providence and Carroll meet in a travel partner match. Sunday and Monday, OIT and SOU host Northwest and Evergreen State, with SOU and Bushnell closing out the regular-season on Thursday, Nov. 2 – a make-up game from a September contest that was rescheduled due to air quality concerns.

SENIOR DAY SET FOR SUNDAY: OIT will honor five senior student-athletes prior to their match-up with Northwest University on Sunday. Sydni Nakamura, Kiah Wetzell, Alexandra Trinidad, Olivia Kreiser and Karly White are set to play their final match in a Lady Owls kit on the home pitch.

NEXT WEEK: If the Lady Owls qualify for the CCC Championships, OIT will have next week off in preparation for the tournament, with quarterfinal matches beginning in Springfield, Ore., on Nov. 6.
