KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – #6 Oregon Tech (35-8, 19-6) kept pace behind College of Idaho in the race for 2nd place by sweeping Eastern Oregon (10-16, 16-28). Tech won 2-1 and 5-1 to remain 1 game behind COI as the CCC Conference Tournament approaches next week. The Lady Owls got two strong outings in the circle from
Sarah Abramson and McKenzie Staub (pictured) to spur them to the victory.
"Great pitching and a couple of timely hits made the difference today," said head coach
Greg Stewart. "We need to come out and hit the ball with confidence tomorrow."
Game One: Oregon Tech 2 Eastern Oregon 1 (8 Innings)
In the opening game of a four game regular season finale, Tech would be in a classic rubber match from the first pitch.
Through the first three frames, Tech starter
Sarah Abramson and EOU starter Amanda Smith went toe-to-toe.
Each starter worked their way around some base runners, but it was Abramson who had the slight edge allowing less hits and walks.
After Abramson threw a scoreless 4th inning, it was Tech who would grab the first lead in the bottom of the 4
th as
Krista Ward would leadoff with a double, and scored on a fielder's choice from
Jensen Becker.
Tech wouldn't plate any more runs in the frame and their 1-0 lead would remain until the 6th inning.
In the top of the 6th, Madison Stateler went yard to left-center to knot the game up at 1 run a piece.
The HR for Stateler would result in 1 of only 2 hits the Mountaineers would have in the game.
The affair would stay knotted at one run a piece pushing the game into extra frames.
In the bottom of the 8th,
Krista Ward hit a 2 out single the opposite way scoring Lethlean to walk-off the opener.
The winning single capped a great performance from Ward who went 2-4 with her teams only RBI of the game.
However, even with Ward's heroics, the game-ball belonged to
Sarah Abramson who pitched an absolute gem.
Abramson threw 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, while striking out 8 batters.
Abramson would pick up the win advancing to 18-5 on the season.
Although she picked up the loss, Mountaineers starter Amanda Smith threw very well in the circle as well. Smith threw 7.1 innings allowing only 1 earned run on 5 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 4.
Game Two: Oregon Tech 5 Eastern Oregon 1
In Game 2, Tech got on the board early grabbing a big lead that they'd never lose.
Tech nabbed a run in the 1st when
Aubrie Businger singled to center field to score
McKenna Armantrout.
After grabbing the early lead, Tech kept the pressure on in the 2nd.
After
Jensen Becker had an RBI single, Tech scored 3 more runs off of a walk and 2 hit by pitches that occurred with the bases loaded.
Given a big lead, McKenzie Staub pitched another gem.
The talented freshman went 7 innings allowing only 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 7.
The victory for Staub was her 18th of the year moving her to 18-3 overall.
The Lady Owls will return to play tomorrow to host Eastern Oregon for 2 more games.
