KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Oregon Tech knocked off NCAA Division II Humboldt State, 75-67 Sunday at Danny Miles Court. The game was an exhibition for the Owls but counted for Humboldt State. Tech used a strong second half where they shot an incredible 67% from the floor that was as high as 83% with 3 minutes left.
"We competed really well defensively and it may have been the best execution on the ball screen we've had in quite some time," said head coach
Justin Parnell. "We also handled their full court pressure really well, regardless of our 16-turnovers. I am proud of these guys. We had a tough weekend in La Grande and bounced back really well tonight."
In the 1st half, both teams went back-and-forth as Tech looked to defend their undefeated home court record against Humboldt State.
Neither team held an advantage of more than 5 points through the first 20 minutes, as it was an entertaining opening half on Danny Miles Court.
After a first half where there was nearly 20 fouls total, Tech held an advantage of 35-33.
The advantage Tech had was a credit to outrebounding (17-12) and outshooting (50%-44.4%) the visiting Lumberjacks.
In the 2nd half, Tech got off to a quick 5-0 run that then allowed them to extend their lead to 10.
For the next 5 minutes the lead would hover around the 8-10 point range, until Humboldt cut their deficit to four with 9 minutes left.
With the momentum looking like it was going to swing towards the Jacks' side,
Keegan Shivers hit back-to-back 3's as Tech countered with an 8-0 run.
The 8-0 run forced a Lumberjacks' timeout as Tech led 66-54 with 7:56 remaining in the game.
After countering Humboldt's comeback attempt the Hustlin' Owls cruised in the final 8 minutes to victory.
A key to the win was the rebounding advantage. Tech grabbed 10 more rebounds than Humboldt.
Tech was led by
Kam Osborn (pictured) and
Harrison Steiger who scored 14 points each for the Hustlin' Owls.
The Hustlin' Owls will return to action April 24th, when they travel to Eugene to face off against the Bushnell Beacons (5-5). Tech beat Bushnell 85-82 and 89-68 to open the season in March.
