Hustlin’ Owls Split Series with College Of Idaho

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Oregon Tech (8-14) dropped the final 2 games in the Sunday Double-Header over College of Idaho (13-14). For the 2nd time this season, the Owls and Yotes faced off in a 4 game series. Ironically, both series resulted in Tech winning the first two games, and the Yotes winning the final two. The two Sunday losses for the Owls drop them to 3-5 in conference play.

"We have moments of showing tremendous progress and took steps forward this weekend," said head coach Jacob Garsez. "Baseball is a game of winning close moments and we did not win enough moments today."

Game Three: College of Idaho 7 Oregon Tech 5

Game 3 was highlighted by the Yotes pitcher, Connor Root. Root shutout the Owls in all 7 innings he pitched, striking out seven and only allowing four Tech hits.

With Root throwing a gem on the mound, the Yotes were able to grab a lead they'd never lose.

Tech starter was able to keep the Yotes off the board in the first two frames, but CI wouldn't be denied. In the Top of the 3rd, Matthew Clay roped in a 2RBI single, which grabbed a 2-0 lead.

The visitors would keep their bats hot in the very next frame, scoring 3 more runs in the top of the 4th. Unfortunately for Tech, they didn't make the Yotes earn the runs, as the runs in the frame were scored off of a wild pitch, a hit by a pitch, and a walk.

The Yotes would add a run in the 5th and a run in the 7th, to push their lead to 7-0 through 7 innings.

The Owls offense would finally spark after CI pulled their starting pitcher.

Tech scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th after Mitchel Swanson homered and Nevan Watanabe hit a SAC Fly to score a run.

Tech would also rally in the bottom of the 9th but would fall 2 runs short of tying the game. Dalton Daily hit his 7th HR that plated 3 more runs, but the Owls couldn't extend the rally, which resulted in a 7-5 loss.

Jacob Miller was the losing pitcher for OIT, throwing 3 frames, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4.

Spencer Dahlke and Ryan Poling would throw well in relief for the Owls which gave them a chance towards the end of the game.

Dahlke threw 3 ⅓ innings, giving up no earned runs, 3 hits, walking 2 while striking 1 out.

Poling threw 2 innings giving up no runs on 2 hits, and striking out 3.

Tech was led at the plate by Swanson, Kaleb Keelean, and Jesse Dunham who each had 2 hits, with Daily adding 3 RBIs.

Game Four: College of Idaho 8 Oregon Tech 6

The series finale began in a classic good 'ol rubber match. Tech starter Patrick Arman and CI starter Austin Van Horne threw 3 scoreless frames a piece to open up the game.

After Arman threw his 4th consecutive scoreless frame, Tech's offense exploded in the bottom of the 4th Inning scoring 6 runs, to grab a 6-0 lead. Daily and Alex Malcom had RBI singles, but the bottom half was easily highlighted by Kellen Mendez (Pictured). Mendez hit his 1st HR of the season a LONG way, for a 3-Run shot that sent his dugout into jubilation.

However, this jubilation would be extremely short-lived.

The visiting Yotes would grab 6 runs of their own in the top of the 5th to tie the game at 6. Like Tech, their frame was highlighted by a 3-run home run as well. The starting pitcher Austin Van Horne helped himself out by sending one yard off of Arman.

This would be the end of the day for Arman, and Trask Telesmanich would come on in relief for the Owls.

Arman finished the day throwing 5 innings, giving up 6 runs, only 2 earned, 6 hits, while striking out 1.

Telesmanich and Van Horne would throw scoreless 6th Inning frames and we'd head to the 7th knotted at 6.

In the 7th inning, Matthew Clay stayed hot plating 2 runs on an RBI single that pushed the CI lead to 8-6, a lead they'd never lose.

Tech had a chance in the bottom of the 9th but fell just short. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out, Swanson and Dunham both struck out to end the game.

The winning pitcher was Van Horne who threw 7 innings, giving up 4 earned runs, 3 hits, walking 6, and striking out 7.

Erik Wisenor would pick up the save for the Yotes to split the series. Wisenor threw 2 innings, giving up no runs on 2 hits while striking out 3.

The losing pitcher for Tech was Telesmanich. He threw 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, with 7-strikeouts.

Tech was led at the plate by Mendez and Daily who each had 2 hits, while the rest of the team combined for just 1.

OIT will return to play next weekend when they host Eastern Oregon (3-9) in a 4 game series at Kiger Stadium. Oregon Tech campus administration will be limiting the number of spectators allowed in our athletic home venues. With our limited venue capacity, we are prioritizing our Oregon Tech student athletes' family members. Oregon Tech is following current Klamath County guidelines which have recently moved into the Moderate Risk category. Moderate Risk allows for a small number of people to be allowed inside venues. Masks and social distancing will be required at all times.
