“Golden Goal” Lifts Hustlin’ Owls to First Win

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –Senior LODEWIJK BLOEMZAAD scored the game winning "Golden Goal" in the second overtime to lift Oregon Tech to its first win of the season 2-1 over Sierra Nevada College Saturday afternoon at the OIT Soccer Field. The Owls move to 1-2-1 on the year with the Eagles slipping to 0-2 with today's result.

"We are grateful to dig out that win today," said Head Coach Matt Munhall. "Sierra was a good opponent that challenged us in a few different areas on the pitch. Being forced to play a man down for 80 minutes of the contest was another adverse lesson that we had to learn today. Regardless of the challenges, we played together and continued to fight until the end of the game. We are happy to see the W go on our record. Now we must turn our sights on CCC action as we open up with College of Idaho on Friday."

Tech's GeRysand Cabanilla received back-to-back yellow cards in the 23rd minute, forcing him off the field and the Owls to play a man down for the remainder of the game.

Cabanilla's yellow cards weren't the only ones in the match as a total of 50 fouls along with 10-yellow cards and 2-red cards were whistled on the two teams.

It took the Eagles 40-minutes playing a man up to finally break through on the scoreboard. They did that in the 67th minute as Arturo Ruiz scored on a free kick just outside the box giving Sierra Nevada a 1-0 lead.

Tech, now down 1-0 and playing 10 v 11, managed to find a new gear. The Owls' offense started putting pressure the Eagles' defense and in the 85th minute Cade Roske scored the equalizer as he put back a ball off a save after a Bloemzaad free kick, tying the game at 1-1 with just five minutes remaining in regulation.

Neither team could muster a good look in the final five minutes as the teams headed to overtime.

Less than five minutes in the first OT, Sierra Nevada's Marco Aguilar was sent off for a direct red card evening the field to 10 v 10.

Oregon Tech dominated both overtimes with a 5-shot to zero advantage in shots. The Owls finally hit the "Golden Goal" in the 103rd minute as Bloemzaad took a Clayton Maves' hot volley inside the box and chipped in the game winner into the back of the net.

Up next: The Hustlin' Owls will hope to carry that momentum into Cascade Conference play next Friday and Saturday as they host College of Idaho and Rocky Mountain respectively at 1:30 pm at the OIT Soccer Field.
