HILLSBORO, Ore. – Oregon Tech rode strong pitching and received key at bats in big spots, as the Hustlin' Owls claimed a crucial doubleheader sweep of Warner Pacific at Hillsboro Ballpark.
Landon Cheney and
Caleb Randolph combined on a 6-hitter in a 3-2 OIT (18-18, 11-13 CCC) victory in Game 1, while
Carson Glavich and
Crew Howell capitalized on a 5-0 third inning lead and benefited from a 10-run eighth, to claim a 15-4 win in the late game.
Cheney allowed just one earned run in five-plus innings, striking out five – surrendering a 2-out first inning RBI single from Mason DeVerna and an unearned run on a 2-out error in the second. Randolph was dominant in earning his third save, retiring the final eight batters in order, allowing just one hit and fanning two.
Tech took the lead in the fifth, as
Aiden Corkery walked and
Michael O'Daniel legged out an infield single.
Cal Pickhardt followed, roping a 2-run triple to tie the score, trotting home on a
Nick Gimino sacrifice fly that provided the winning run.
Five different Owls had one hit in the win, as Knights (10-24, 5-18) starter Danny Tober struck out five in eight innings.
Tech jumped on WPU starter Ayden Yeager in Game 2, as
Logan Pontecorvo doubled in a first inning run, while in the third, Pickhardt delivered a 2-run single and Nick Halouchits tripled home a pair to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Knights cut the lead to 5-4 with a 3-run sixth, including an Anthony Zisa 2-run double – but Glavich his sixth strikeout, fanning Jarrod Siebel to end the threat.
OIT opened the flood gates in the eighth – sending 14 batters to the plate. The Owls scored runs on a balk, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, getting RBI singles from Pickhardt and Gimino, with Pontecorvo knocking in three with a bases-clearing double.
Glavich held WPU to five hits in earning his second-straight win, with Howell allowing just two hits in picking up the save. Pickhardt, Gimino and Pontecorvo all had two hits, with
Logan Macy going 2-for-6 with three runs scored – extending his hit streak to 15 games.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Milwaukie High.
