KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech was twice within a strike of victory in Game 2 of a Sunday doubleheader with Lewis-Clark State, but Brandon Nguyen spoiled the home crowd with a 2-out, 2-strike, 2-run home run off the scoreboard in right, helping the Warriors complete a 4-game sweep of the Owls at Bocchi Field.
No. 12-ranked LCSC (18-3, 10-3 CCC) earned an 11-1 win in today's opener, with the long ninth inning home giving the Warriors a 6-5 win in Game 2.
The loss in the nightcap spoiled a tremendous start from OIT (12-14, 5-9) freshman
Marcos Ulloa-Ford, as the righty tossed a season-high eight innings, allowing four runs and striking out eight in a no decision.
Tech trailed 4-0 in the third after a Jackson Jaha 2-run homer and a Payton Smith 2-run single, but the Owls chipped away.
Michael O'Daniel singled home a run in the fifth and added a 2-run single in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. An inning later,
Nick Gimino tripled home the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a
Dylan Edwards sacrifice fly.
LC was down to their last out in the ninth, but Sam Weber lined a 2-strike pinch-hit single, setting the stage for Nguyen, who fouled off two 0-2 pitches, before driving a fastball above the zone over the wall in right.
Four OIT players had two hits – O'Daniel, Gimino,
Logan Macy and
Landon Cheney.
Game 1 was all LC, as Warrior pitchers combined to strike out 15 Tech batters. Mason Goodson tossed five shutout innings, holding the Owls to three hits, striking out eight, to pick up the win. Nguyen had a 2-run single in the second to extend a lead to 4-0, with a seventh inning Jackson Reed 2-run homer, giving the visitors an 8-0 lead.
Andrew Sharp was the offensive standout for the Owls, going 4-for-4 in the loss.
Tech hits the road next weekend, traveling to Bushnell for a 4-game series, beginning Friday at 2 p.m.
