Lady Owls Split Top-25 Matchup with Hope International

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Malia Mick singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to help Oregon Tech claim the opener vs. Hope International, but the Royals ended the Owls 7-game win streak with a Game 2 win at the ACU Softball Complex.

The Lady Owls (7-1) earned a 3-2 win in the opener, while the Royals took the nightcap, 7-1.

OIT rallied from a 2-0 deficit in Game 1, as HIU (8-5) plated an unearned run in the first and added a Chey Navarro RBI double in the third. The Owls got even in the fifth, as consecutive fielders' choices from Nita Cook and Mick drove in runs.

In the seventh, Leah Huffman and Cook reached with 2-out singles and stole second and third, before Mick knocked in Huffman with a single to give Tech the lead.

Kristine Schmidt scattered four hits to earn the complete game victory, with Mick going 2-for-4 with two RBI and Huffman going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Tech started quickly in Game 2, as Gina Allen tripled and scored in a 2-out run down to stake the Owls to a 1-0 lead.

HIU answered in the third, as a Navarro singled gave the California school the lead, while in the fifth, the Royals batted around for five – needing just two hits – taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch, two walks, a wild pitch and an error.

Samantha Elizalde held the Owls to just four hits for the Royals, as Allen finished 2-for-3 for Tech.

OIT returns to action next weekend, traveling to Redding for the Simpson Crossover – meeting Park Gilbert, Arizona Christian and Westcliff.
