KIRKLAND, Wash. – Career nights from freshmen Ayla Marsten and
Maddie Eischen were overshadowed by
Tatum Schmerbach, as the junior recorded her second triple-double of the year and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her Oregon Tech career, helping the Lady Owls top Northwest, 81-69, inside Kristi Brodin Pavilion.
OIT (12-7, 8-3 CCC) improved to 5-0 on the road in league play, converting 50% of their field goals in the victory.
Schmerbach finished night with a team-high 19 points, adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists – becoming the first Tech player with multiple triple-doubles in a career. She reached the 1,000-point mark with a put-back bucket midway through the third quarter, giving her squad a 50-39 lead.
The Lady Owls used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to erase a 6-2 lead by the Eagles (6-13, 2-9), capped by a Schmerbach 3-point play. Schmerbach added consecutive baskets in an 8-0 run late in the second quarter, helping the visitors take a 39-24 lead to the break.
NU tried to hang around, connecting on 7-of-12 3-pointers in the second half – getting within 54-46 in the third quarter. Tech proved to be too much, as back-to-back
Olivia Sprague jumpers built the margin to 72-57, putting the game out of reach.
Marsten scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Eischen came off the bench to score 10 points and 5-of-8 shooting.
Jozie Ramos added 13 points and Sprague had 12 points in the victory.
The Eagles were paced by 20 points from Kaelah Madeiros and Ella Whitaker added 15.
Tech closes out a 4-game road swing tomorrow with a 3 p.m. match-up at Evergreen – live on 104.3/960 Sports.
