ASHLAND, Ore. – Defense turned into offense in Oregon Tech's final match at the Raider Invitational, riding 11 service aces and a 7-1 edge in blocks to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Simpson inside Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Lucy Boyd flirted with a triple-double, recording seven kills, 25 assists and eight digs, with
Abigail Sorensen ending the day with 14 digs and a career-high five aces, as the Lady Owls (2-1) extended their win streak over their California rivals to 14 matches.
Tech broke a 20-20 tie in Set 1 with a 4-0 run – as a Boyd kill and a
Brooklynn Thesenvitz ace started the rally and a
Shalyn Bliss kill ended the surge, with a Bliss kill ending the set.
OIT continued the momentum with a dominant Set 2, scoring nine of the first 10 points – including two Sorensen aces, with a pair of aces from
Sumerlyn Spencer extending the margin to 19-6.
The Redhawks (0-4) gave the Owls a tussle in Set 3, taking a 15-14 lead on a Mariah Napoleon kill – but Sorensen stepped up for Tech, recording consecutive aces in an 11-2 run to end the match.
Bliss led the Lady Owls with eight kills,
Lex Boccia posted seven kills and
Aleksen Thayer led all players with six blocks.
Napoleon paced all players with 11 kills for Simpson, but the Redhawks committed 25 attack errors and finished with a .038 hitting percentage.
The Owls hit the road next weekend to the Tri-Cities of Tennessee, for the Milligan Mountain Madness, hosted by Milligan University.
