KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Eastern Oregon pitcher Kylie Parsons was one strike away from a perfect game, settling for a 1-hit shutout, as the Mountaineers upset top-seed Oregon Tech, 5-0, on Day 2 of the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, at Stilwell Stadium.
The No. 14-ranked Mountaineers (31-9) advance to tomorrow's title game at 1:30 p.m., where they will meet the winner of the OIT-British Columbia semifinal.
No. 2-ranked OIT (42-8) could not find an answer against Parsons, who used her drop-ball to perfection – recording 14 ground ball outs. The right-hander retired the first 20 batters in order, before the Owls
Jayce Seavert lined a 2-strike pitch into the left-center gap for a double, but Parsons got
Puakea Milbourne to fly out to deep left to end the game.
EOU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, as Emily Barry hit her tenth home run of the year, a 2-run blast. The Mounties extended the lead in the fifth, as Barry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Hope Burke added a 2-run ground-rule double.
Burke, Barry and Katelynn Evans each had two hits in the win for EOU.
Tech will meet UBC for the second time in the tournament at 11 a.m. on Sunday – as the T-Birds earned two elimination game wins, topping Carroll, 4-1, and stunning Southern Oregon, 6-3. If OIT wins – EOU will claim the second automatic qualifier from the Cascade Conference, while a UBC victory would give the tournament winner the national tourney bid.
