LEWISTON, Idaho –
Ka'ala Tam posted five hits and four RBI, helping Oregon Tech split their second doubleheader at No. 20-ranked Lewis-Clark State, dropping the opener, 7-6, before rallying for an 11-6 win in Game 2.
The Hustlin' Owls (21-11, 12-9 CCC) closed out the road portion of their regular-season schedule with a 17-10 record, as the club will play their final 16 games at Steen Sports Park.
After the Warriors (19-10, 15-6) rallied in the late innings to grab Game 1, Tech returned the favor in the nightcap to split the season series with the perennial NAIA power for the second-straight season.
OIT had a 5-0 lead in Game 2 – scoring three first inning runs, including a
Julien Jones RBI single – adding two in the third on a wild pitch and a
Logan Macy sacrifice fly. LC answered, as a Jack Sheward 2-run homer in the third started the rally and a Charlie Updegrave 2-run blast in the fifth gave the hosts a 6-5 lead.
Tech was undeterred, as
Korrey Siracusa tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and took the lead in the seventh on a Macy single and a Tam 2-run base hit.
Noah Loew allowed an unearned run in two innings of work for the win, with
Bronson Chapple retiring all nine batters he faced to lock down the save.
Tyler Horner was 3-for-5, Tam was 2-for-5,
Matthew Ortiz scored three runs and Macy drove in three in the victory. Ortiz, with his third run scored in the game, broke a 13-year-old OIT all-time record for career runs scored with 155.
The Owls were in position to win Game 1, as a Horner 3-run homer in the fifth inning, his 11th of the year, gave OIT a 6-4 lead. However, the Tech bullpen could not hold the edge, as Bulla Ephan capped a 3-for-3 game with a go-ahead 2-run double in the seventh – and the LC relievers held the Owls scoreless over the final four frames.
Tam was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Ortiz was 3-for-5 and Siracusa was 2-for-2 in the loss for OIT, with
Isaac Hill tossing six innings of four-hit ball in a no-decision.
The Owls return home next weekend for a 4-game series against Eastern Oregon.
