REDDING, Calif. –
Matthew Ortiz had a 6-hit day and
Patrick Barry extended his school-record hit streak to 25 games, as Oregon Tech completed a 4-game sweep of Simpson with 7-6 and 6-1 victories.
The Hustlin' Owls (7-2) got eight-plus innings of quality relief in Game 1, while
Carson Glavich and
Noah Loew combining on a 5-hitter in the nightcap.
Barry broke the OIT hitting streak record with a third inning single in the opener, extending the mark with an RBI single in the second inning of Game 2. It is the third-longest hit streak in Cascade Conference history, behind College of Idaho's Dustin Garcia (28) in 2003 and Scott Skeen (27) in 2001. LC State had four players with a hit streak of over 25 games (topped by Justin Fuller's 30-game streak in 2004) – but LC was not a CCC member at the time.
Tech had to rally for the win in Game 1 – despite grabbing a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on an RBI single from
Landon Cheney and a
Keanu Mizuta bases loaded walk. The Redhawks (4-13) capitalized on five walks in the bottom of the inning to plate four runs.
OIT battled back, scoring a run on a
Julien Jones-
Michael O'Daniel double-steal in the second, adding three runs in the third – including RBI singles from Barry and Ortiz – to take the lead.
SU tied the score at 6-6 in the sixth, only to see Tech answer in the eighth as Ortiz doubled and trotted home on a Jones RBI double.
Caleb Randolph pitched two shutout innings to earn the win, with
Riley Cronin throwing a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Brian McClelland keyed the win, throwing three and two-thirds innings of one run relief, striking out a career high six.
Ortiz was 4-for-6, with Jones and Cheney each recording multi-hit games for the Owls.
Tech never trailed in Game 2 – taking a 5-0 third inning lead and riding the strong outings of Glavich and Loew.
Ortiz led off the game with a double, stole third and scored on a
Tyler Horner sacrifice fly. An inning later, O'Daniel and Barry rapped back-to-back RBI singles, while in the third,
Ka'ala Tam clubbed a 2-run homer.
Glavich allowed one run on three hits, striking out three in the win, with Loew striking out five in three shutout innings, for a save. Ortiz and O'Daniel each had two hits in the win, with Isaiah Calderin recording three hits in the loss for Simpson.
Tech continues their road trip next Friday, opening a 3-game weekend series at Bushell.
