Lady Owls Split Twinbill at UBC, Win Streak Snapped at 19

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Kacie Schmidt tossed a 1-hit shutout in the opener, however, Oregon Tech saw a 19-game win streak snapped in the nightcap, as the Lady Owls and British Columbia split a Cascade Conference softball doubleheader at Collings Field.

OIT (27-7, 14-3 CCC) had 10 hits in the 8-0 victory in Game 1, while UBC rode a complete game effort from Carleen Murray in Game 2, scoring the final seven runs in a 7-1 win.

Nita Cook combined for four hits on the day for the Lady Owls – extending her career-high hitting streak to 15 games.

Tech loaded the bases to start Game 1, with Lexi Klum drawing a walk to plate Cook with the first run of the day. Later in the inning, Jayce Seavert lined a 2-run single to extend the margin to 3-0.

It was more than enough for Schmidt, who retired the first 17 batters in order and did not allow a hit until the seventh – earning her 14th win of the season.

OIT broke the game open in the sixth, as Zoe Allen delivered a 2-out RBI infield single and Kaila Mick followed with 2-run single through the left side.

Kaila Mick, Malia Mick and Addison Kachnik all posted 2-hit games in the victory.

Cook continued her solid day in Game 2, lining a third inning single, stealing second and scoring on a 2-out UBC error. Unfortunately for Tech – the Owls offense did not score again.

The T-Birds (17-14, 9-7) rallied during their second time through the order – recording four-straight singles to open the fourth, including RBI singles from Shae Sever and Gabby Dorval – giving the Canadian squad their first lead of the day.

UBC put the game away with a 3-run sixth inning rally.

Murray worked around six hits, allowing an unearned run, to pick up the victory.

The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
