Hustlin' Owls Open Senior Weekend with Saturday Sweep

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Matthew Ortiz had five hits on the day, as Oregon Tech opened up Senior Weekend with 10-3 and 16-3 victories over Corban University at Steen Sports Park.

The Hustlin' Owls (32-16, 16-6 CCC) clinched the No. 2-seed in the upcoming Cascade Conference Championships, though saw their slim chance at a repeat league title thwarted when LC State swept two games from Bushnell.

Tech took advantage of 12 hit-by-pitches on the day and 11 walks as nearly every healthy position player saw action in the twinbill – including senior Kage Southern, who logged his first career hit in Game 2.

The Warriors (9-36, 4-18) took a 1-0 lead in the opener on a Nainoa Ka'ahanui RBI double and a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a Brad Pelkoffer single – but the Owls capitalized on wildness on the hill to take their first lead. OIT loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and two hit-by-pitches and grabbed the lead with runs scored on consecutive wild pitches. Dane Bradshaw followed with a 2-run single through the left side and a throwing error on an Ortiz single capped the 5-run inning.

OIT put the game away with a 3-run seventh, with Chase Hedani providing the big knock, a 2-run triple.

Cody Dubray grinded through six innings working around six hits and seven walks for the win, striking out seven. Drake Aboud logged his first save, getting the final nine outs. Ortiz finished th game 2-for-4 and Bradshaw had three RBI in the win.

The Owls never trailed in Game 2 – riding a solid start from ace Bronson Chapple, who tied the OIT school record with his ninth win and set a single-season record by logging his 79th strikeout. The righty scattered four hits in his ninth-straight win.

Julien Jones singled home a first inning run – part of a 3-run frame – staking the Owls to a lead. Tech would score four third inning runs without a hit – taking advantage of three walks, two hit-by-pitches and three wild pitches, before 2-run singles by Patrick Barry and Ty Blakely in the fourth extended the margin to 11-1.

OIT forced the mercy-rule with a 5-run sixth, as Bradshaw doubled home and run and Matthew Lehrbach singled home two.  Jaden Domingsel closed out the victory, fanning two in his Hustlin' Owl debut.

Both Ortiz and Barry had three hits and three runs scored in the nightcap and Blakely delivered a trio of RBI. Ryan Clay had the big hit for Corban, slugging his seventh home run, a solo blast, in the fifth.

"I am proud of all the support our guys show each other today," said OIT head coach Jacob Garsez. "Kage recorded his first college hit and Jaden with his first college strikeout – two guys that work very hard and represent our program well. It was a great team day."

The two teams close out the regular-season tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader – with OIT honoring their seven seniors – Southern, Dubray, Lehrbach, Patrick Arman, Kellen Mendez, Ryan Poling and Collin Brougham in a ceremony between games.
