KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –
Puakea Milbourne drove in six runs on the day and
Kacie Schmidt earned a win and save with six-plus innings of 1-hit ball, as Oregon Tech pulled into a tie for first-place in the Cascade Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Warner Pacific at Stilwell Stadium.
The No. 4-ranked Lady Owls (33-7, 18-3 CCC) rolled to a 13-0 victory in Game 1, while grabbing a 4-2 win in the non-conference series finale. OIT extended their win streak to six games, improving to 17-0 at home this season.
Tech dominated the opener – recording 13 hits and scoring in all four of their at bats. Milbourne started the scoring with a 2-run single in the first, with
Malia Mick extending the lead to 3-0 in the second with an infield single.
In the third, OIT had 10-straight batters reach with 2-outs, batting around for nine runs – getting a 2-run single from
Mckenzie Staub, a 2-run inside-the-park homer from
Addison Kachnik and a 2-run double by Milbourne.
Schmidt went the first four innings, allowing a single and striking out five for her 17th win. Milbourne was 3-for-3,
Zoe Allen finished 3-for-4 and Staub was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
Game 2 was much closer, as the Knights (3-29, 2-19) scored in the first inning for the third time in the series – as Briana Munoz delivered a 2-out RBI single. Tech answered in the bottom of the inning as Allen walked, stole second and scored on a Milbourne ground out.
Two innings later, OIT took a 3-1 lead, as Milbourne and
Lexi Klum delivered back-to-back RBI singles. In the fifth WP recorded 4-straight 2-out singles, including a Munoz RBI single, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
With the bases loaded – play was halted for 54 minutes due to a thunderstorm that delivered quarter-sized hail. When action resumed, Schmidt was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Nikki O'Reilly to end the threat – and retired WP in order in the sixth and seventh to log the save.
Kaila Mick was 3-for-3 in the victory, with Staub striking out five in four-plus innings to earn the win.
Nita Cook capped the scoring with a sixth inning RBI double, extending her hit streak to 21 games.
OIT hits the road next weekend, traveling to Montana for a 4-game series at Carroll College.
