Horner Goes 7-for-7 in Hustlin' Owls Split with LC State

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Tyler Horner reached base in all 10 at bats, going 7-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI, helping Oregon Tech split a Saturday doubleheader with No. 8-ranked Lewis-Clark State at Steen Sports Park.

The Hustlin' Owls (22-13, 8-3 CCC) used a 9-run fifth inning to earn their first-ever run-rule victory over LC, winning Game 1, 13-3, while the Warriors answered with a 6-run sixth inning to claim Game 2, 10-5.

Game 4 of the series is set for Easter Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.

Tech took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 – as Kyle Norton walked and Horner doubled into the right field corner. Julien Jones plated Norton with a ground out and Korrey Siracusa lined a 2-out RBI single to score Horner.

LC (19-8, 9-2 CCC) pulled even with single runs in the fourth and fifth – as Jake Gish doubled home a run and Carter Booth tied the game with an RBI ground out.

OIT answered with a monster bottom of the fifth – sending 13 batters to the plate. Ty Blakely singled, with Patrick Barry and Matthew Ortiz turning sacrifice attempts into infield singles. Norton followed with a potential double-play ball, but Pu'ukani De Sa bobbled the ground ball and compounded the play by making an errant throw to first – allowing a pair to score.

After intentionally walking Horner, Julien Jones hit a routine fly ball to center that Booth lost in the midday sun, turning into an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2. Siracusa would walk with the bases loaded and Alonzo Vergara singled home another – with Ka'ala Tam providing the big blow, a 3-run double down the left field line.

It was more than enough for Bronson Chapple, who tossed a complete game 6-hitter, striking out five, to earn his sixth win of the year.

Horner was 3-for-3 with two doubles, with Siracusa and Tam each recording two hits.

The Owls looked to continue the rally in Game 2, taking a 4-0 lead in the first – including RBI singles from Horner and Tam.

Nick Seamons pulled the Warriors within 4-3 in the second with a 2-run single, before Horner got a run back in the bottom of the inning with a 2-out RBI single.

LC flipped the script in the sixth – stringing together three 2-out, 2-strike 2-run hits, as Gish tying the game with a 2-run single, Dominic Signorelli giving the Warriors the lead with a 2-run single and Jack Sheward capping the rally with a 2-run double.

Reliever Jace Hanson earned the win, tossing five-plus innings of shutout relief, holding Tech to four hits – with Sheward going 3-for-4 for LC.

Horner was 4-for-4, Jones finished 3-for-5 and Ortiz extended his hit-streak to 17 games with a 2-hit game. OIT starter Isaac Hill pitched five innings, limiting LC to five hits and striking out four.
