Walk-Off Homer Sinks Lady Owls, Game 2 Suspended

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Grace Leatherwood hit a pinch hit, walk-off 2-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, lifting Eastern Oregon to a 2-1 victory over Oregon Tech in the opening game of a weekend series at Peggy Anderson Field.

Game 2 of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the first inning with EOU (8-2, 1-0 CCC) leading 1-0 - as a snow squall moved into the area and temperatures fell below the Cascade Conference playable threshold.

The opener was a pitchers' duel between the two top arms in the CCC - Lady Owls (8-5, 0-1) ace Kacie Schmidt and EOU's Kaylie Hoskins. Schmidt took a 2-hit shutout into the eighth inning, striking out a season-high 10 - but Kelly Monaghan blooped a 2-out single into right, with Leatherwood following with the game-winning blast.

Hoskins retired the first 12 batters in order and worked out of trouble in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. OIT stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh. The Lady Owls got to the lefty in the eighth, as Zoe Allen and Kaila Mick single, with Allen scoring on a Lexi Klum base-hit - giving Tech the 1-0 lead.

Klum and Mckenzie Staub each had two hits for the Lady Owls in the loss.

Hoskins gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out nine to earn the win.

The suspended game will resume Sunday at Noon, followed by the final conference match-up. Game 4 of the series was canceled.
