KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Etch another wild and crazy contest into the legendary Oregon Tech-Southern Oregon men's basketball rivalry, as
Kam Osborn scored seven of his game-high 26 points in the second overtime session, helping the Hustlin' Owls outlast the Raiders, 97-94, before over 1,700 fans at Danny Miles Court.
The first multi-overtime game in the series since a triple-overtime thriller in 1983 saw both teams squander opportunities to claim a victory at the end of regulation and the first overtime – with the Owls (6-3, 2-1 CCC) riding a 57-percent shooting night to their fourth-straight win in the series.
Tech seemingly had the game in hand, using a 15-5 run midway through the second half to break a 53-53 tie.
Jackson Cooper converted twice on the block, Osborn splashed a corner triple and
Blake Jensen added a lay-in in the run, giving the Owls a 68-58 lead with five minutes left.
Trailing 72-62, SOU (5-4, 0-3) chipped away. Elijah Jackson converted 3-straight free throws, with both Gabe Reichle and Mason Whittaker knocking down 3's – cutting the margin to 74-73 with 12 seconds left. After Tech's
Jamison Guerra missed the front end of a 1-and-1, the Raiders got the ball in Jackson's hands, with his 18-footer at the horn rimming out – but a foul call gave the visitors a chance to win the game at the line. Jackson missed the first of two opportunities, but hit the second to force overtime.
In the first overtime, as Osborn 3-pointer gave the Owls an 84-81 lead, but Southern got two defensive stops and converted 6-straight free throws, taking an 87-84 lead with 20 seconds left. After Cooper pulled OIT within 87-86 inside the final 10 seconds, the Owls fouled Bryce Dyer, who split two free throws – giving the hosts a chance. Guerra pushed the ball up floor, scoring on a driving lay-up with four seconds left to extend the game.
OIT never trailed in the final overtime, as an Osborn jumper gave the Owls a 93-89 lead. SOU cut the margin to 93-92 on a Khalil Chatman put-back, but Osborn made 4-of-4 free throws late and Jackson rimmed out a game-tying 3-point attempt at the final horn.
The Hustlin' Owls won their fifth-straight overtime game in the series – dating back to a 1999 loss – and their first-ever multiple overtime win against SOU (lost in three overtimes at SOU in 1983 and in two overtimes in 1958).
Osborn made 9-of-10 free throws in the victory, with Guerra scoring 19 points, posting 10 assists and seven rebounds. Jensen scored a season-high 19, making 8-of-9 field goals, Cooper had 12 points off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting, with
Keegan Shivers finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jackson scored a career-high 23 points for SOU, going 10-for-11 at the line, with Whittaker scoring a season-high 21 and Reichle scoring 18. Dyer had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds – including nine offensive boards – as the Raiders ended the night with 23 second chance points.
Tech improved to 165-87 in the series.
Both teams head to the Willamette Valley next weekend for games at Bushnell and Corban.
