KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –
Keegan Shivers became the 37th member of the Oregon Tech 1,000-point club – one of three players to record double-doubles – as the Hustlin' Owls converted 60-percent of their field goals in a wild 112-98 victory over Bushnell University at Danny Miles Court.
A season-high crowd of 1,843 fans for the 14th Annual Pink Out, presented by Sky Lakes Breast Health Services, were treated to an offensive explosion by the Cascade Conference rivals.
Shivers scored seven of the first 11 points for the Hustlin' Owls (13-3, 8-2 CCC), helping the hosts jump out to a 16-6 lead four minutes into the contest. The junior drained a runner in the paint to hit the milestone mark midway through the half to give Tech a 33-24 lead.
A steal and basket from
Erik Fraser extended the edge to 43-31, but the Beacons (9-7, 6-4) rattled off 8-straight points, capped by a Trevon Richmond steal and lay-up to get the visitors back in the game.
The two teams traded run-after-run in the second half.
Kam Osborn and Shivers canned 3s to give OIT a 71-59 lead early in the second half, but BU responded with 7-straight points, capped by a Stevie Schlabach triple, to cut the edge to 79-75. The Owls put the game away late, as a 3-point play from
Blake Jensen was followed by a
Jay Elmore trey, extending the lead to 93-80 – with the margin staying in double-digits the rest of the night.
Three OIT players recorded double-doubles – the first time in 21 years the Hustlin' Owls recorded the rare feat (Todd Matthews, Matt Johnson, Kevin Baker at Southern Oregon on Feb. 8, 2003). Shivers had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Jensen had 18 points and 10 boards, with
Jamison Guerra scoring 18 with 12 assists.
Kam Osborn led the Owls with 25 points – including 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range – part of a season-high 14 3-point field goal makes by the victors.
Kaden Sand led all scorers with 32 points for the Beacons, making 12-of-14 field goal attempts. Schlabach scored 18, with Cory Johnson adding 14 off the bench. BU lost despite making 50-percent of their field goals on the night.
The Hustlin' Owls close out the weekend homestand tomorrow afternoon, hosting Corban at 5 p.m.
