KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A record-setting night from
Molly Grace was not enough for Oregon Tech, as the Lady Owls dropped their second-straight 5-set contest, as Bushnell University rallied for a 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory at Danny Miles Court.
Grace recorded 28 kills in the loss, breaking the OIT (6-10, 4-5 CCC) single-match record – surpassing 27-kill efforts by former head coach Joey Parnell in 2011 and Kelsey Sampson in 2015. It marked the third-straight 20-or-more kill match for the junior, the first since Chase Bohman logged 4-straight 20-kill matches in 2018.
After the Beacons (9-4, 7-2) held on for a Set 4 win, the visitors road the service game of Leah Agost in the deciding set – rattling off 6-straight points, including her seventh and final ace of the night – as BU took a 9-2 edge.
Grace tried to rally Tech, hammering four kills to pull the hosts within 14-12, before an overpass by the Owls led to a Maddy Ladd kill that ended the match.
OIT won the opening set behind eight kills from Grace, including two kills in a 6-0 run that broke a 13-13 tie. BU answered in the second set, as Agost rattled off 3-straight aces in a 9-0 run that blew open a close frame.
The Lady Owls never trailed in Set 3 – opening on a 5-0 run.
Kate Hicks added a stuff block and a combo block with
Paige Tevelde in a late surge that extended the lead to 21-13. OIT had a chance to close out the match in Set 4, as the two sides were even at 21-21, but an Agost kill and consecutive hitting errors by the Owls, handed the frame to the visitors.
Grace finished with 11 digs and a team-high three aces, with
Willow Jacobson adding 13 kills and
Kennedy Kantola adding 10 kills. Tevelde had a career-high 56 assists and
Kaley Whalen recorded 26 digs in the loss.
BU won despite a 61-50 deficit in kills – as Ladd logged 11 kills and both Agost and Halle Neuman posted 10.
OIT closes out the first half of the Cascade Conference season next weekend at Evergreen State and Northwest.
