KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech rallied from a 3-0 deficit to steal a Game 1 win, but Corban University used a 9-run first inning to split todays Cascade Conference baseball doubleheader at Steen Sports Park.
The Hustlin' Owls (24-12, 11-3 CCC) took over sole possession of first-place in the CCC standings, as
Matthew Ortiz plated
Korrey Siracusa from third on a ninth inning fielders choice to earn a 4-3 victory. Unfortunately, the Warriors used a 16-hit attack and 10 stolen bases en route to a 15-9 win in Game 2.
Warriors (9-23, 3-7) left-hander Hayden Van Acker handcuffed the OIT hitters – tossing six no-hit innings, striking out six – handing the bullpen a 3-0 lead after a 3-run sixth. Tech chipped away, as
Tyler Horner golfed a 2-run homer in the seventh to cut the margin to one-run and an inning later,
Bryce Petrilla singled and scored on a 2-out pitch-hit RBI single from
Matthew Lehrbach to tie the game.
In the ninth,
Korrey Siracusa led off with a double and following an intentional walk to Horner,
Julien Jones reached on an error to load the bases. Ortiz came through with Tech's first walk-off winner in two seasons, hitting a slow ground ball to second, with Siracusa beating the throw home to end the contest.
Patrick Arman tossed eight strong innings, allowing one earned run on five hits in a no-decision, with
Ryan Poling throwing a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Siracusa reached base in all five plate appearances in the victory.
Corban set the tone in the nightcap – as seven-straight batters reached to start the game. Keenan O'Brien hit the fourth pitch of the game over the left field wall to give the visitors the lead – with Elijah Maris, Brad Pellkofer and Scott Artzer all adding RBI singles – part of a 9-run, 8-hit explosion against three OIT pitchers.
The Owls cut the gap to 9-6 in the second – getting back-to-back first inning RBI doubles from Jones and Ortiz and second inning RBI knocks from Siracusa and Horner – but could not get closer. The Warriors plated a pair in the third and three more runs in the fourth to extend the margin to 14-7 and cruised to the win.
Artzer and Kyle Clay each had 4-for-6 games for the Warriors, with reliever Preston Johnson retiring all nine batters he faced to earn the win.
Six different OIT players had two hits – Siracusa, Horner, Ortiz,
Ka'ala Tam,
Dane Bradshaw and
Sean Tobin.
Braeden Bellum was solid in relief, allowing one run on four hits in four-plus innings, striking out five.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader. OIT holds a 2-game lead on Bushnell and a 3-game lead on College of Idaho in the CCC standings.
