Hustlin' Owls Record Historic Sweep at #3 LC State

LEWISTON, Idaho – For the first time in program history, Oregon Tech swept a doubleheader against a Top-5 team, riding a pair of dominant pitching performances to 3-0 and 3-2 victories over Lewis-Clark State at Harris Field.

The Hustlin' Owls (22-10, 9-1 CCC) completed their first-ever sweep of the No. 3-ranked Warriors – handing LCSC their first home regular-season shutout loss since 2015 – while winning their tenth game in 11 outings.

"We competed well today on the mound," said OIT head coach Jacob Garsez. "Two quality starts and competitive efforts to close the games. Our offense was tough against a good staff and our defense made crucial plays. These were overall good team wins – we'll enjoy tonight and be ready to go again tomorrow."

Patrick Arman and Braeden Bellum combined on a 1-hit shutout in the opener, while Lalo Barraza held LCSC (19-9, 4-6) to two runs on four hits in seven strong innings in Game 2.

Tech took a 3-0 lead after two innings in Game 1 – loading the bases with no outs in the first, with Matthew Ortiz delivering a sacrifice fly. An inning later, singles by Sean Tobin and Korrey Siracusa were followed by a Tyler Horner single to plate Tobin, with Siracusa scoring from first on a fielding error.

Arman did the rest – taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning – walking just one batter and striking out three – in seven innings of work. Bellum retired the final six batters in order for his first save – as Tech logged their first 1-hitter since the 2011 season.

With the win, Arman earned his 16th all-time victory – tying John Schulz for the most wins in program history.

Horner was 3-for-5, with Tobin and Siracusa each adding two hits for Tech.

LC took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, as Nick Seamons hit his league-leading 11th home run of the season with two outs in the fourth. However, OIT answered in the sixth, as Tobin walked and Horner knocked him home with a game-tying double. Julien Jones followed with a run-scoring single to give Tech a 2-1 lead.

The Warriors tied the score in the seventh, as Dominic Signorelli tripled and scored on a Jack Seward single, but the Owls regained the lead in the eighth on back-to-back doubles from Ka'ala Tam and Brodie Marino.

The OIT bullpen worked out of two monster jams to close out the win – as LC loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Ryan Poling got a pop up to end the threat. In the ninth, a 2-out walk was followed by back-to-back singles to load the bases – but closer Riley Cronin got Seamons to fly out to deep right field to end the game.

Barraza struck out five to earn his sixth win of 2023, with Cronin picking up his fifth save. Both Jones and Tam had two hits in the Game 2 win.

The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
