Lady Owls Win No. 1,200, Complete Series Sweep of Carroll

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Kaila Mick homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, helping Oregon Tech complete a weekend sweep of Carroll College, winning 15-1 and 5-2 at Stilwell Stadium.

The No. 5-ranked Lady Owls (16-5, 8-1 CCC) pulled even with Southern Oregon atop the Cascade Conference standings – with their Game 1 victory the 1,200th-win in program history. OIT combined for 39 runs and 45 in the four wins, improving to 7-0 on their own diamond in 2023.

"That was a good team performance today," said OIT head coach Greg Stewart. "Our lineup is getting better and the ladies keep making some good adjustments with their swings and approach at the plate. The pitching staff put together two solid efforts – holding a good hitting team to just three runs on the day."

Tech scored the first 15 runs in the opener – scoring in each of their four chances to bat. Jayce Seavert opened the scoring with a first inning RBI double – trotting home on a Maggie Buckholz single, with a Mckenzie Staub double plating Buckholz to make it 3-0.

OIT batted around for six runs in the second inning – as Mick started the parade with a bloop RBI double down the left field line. Puakea Milbourne laced a 2-run double and Lexi Klum lined a 2-run triple off the wall in right-center, extending the margin to 9-0.

Mick lined her second home run of the series in the third, a two-run blast, to give Tech a 11-0 lead, while an inning later, the Owls added four runs – including a run-scoring double from Marla Goodspeed.

Kacie Schmidt pitched four innings of one-hit ball to record her eighth victory. Mick was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI and Seavert was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Tech.  Kaitlynn Ayers provided the Saints (7-11, 3-6) with their lone run, a long solo homer in the fifth inning to avoid the shutout.

Game 2 was much tighter – as the Fighting Saints brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning – but a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Tech took a 1-0 lead in the third on a 2-out RBI double from Mick, but Carroll answered in the fourth – tying the score of a opposite-field RBI double from Whitney Durocher.

Staub, who pitched the first five innings, striking out seven, to earn the win, helped her own cause with a 2-out seeing-eye single in the bottom of the fourth to score Seavert with the go-ahead run. Klum followed with an RBI double and Addison Kachnik ripped an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Owls continued the attack, as Buckholz singled home a run in the fifth to give the hosts a 4-run lead, but a pinch-hit RBI double from Jessica Nimmo in the sixth cut the deficit to 5-2 – setting up the seventh inning drama.

Each of the nine players in the OIT order had at least one hit, including a 2-for-3 effort from Zoe Allen.

Amber Countryman was 2-for-3 in the loss for the Saints.

Tech remains at home next weekend, hosting Warner Pacific in a 4-game series.
