Dominant Pitching Leads Lady Owls to Sweep at Simpson

REDDING, Calif. – Mckenzie Staub handcuffed the Simpson University attack in the opener and Kacie Schmidt took a no-hitter into the seventh of the late game, as Oregon Tech swept a Sunday doubleheader at Simpson University, winning 7-1 and 6-1.

Staub held the Redhawks (8-5) to five hits in the Game 1 victory, allowing just one run and striking out seven. Schmidt one-upped her in the nightcap, striking out a career-high 11 – finishing three outs away from a no-hitter.

The Lady Owls (7-3) never trailed on the day – scoring the first seven runs in Game 1 and the first six runs of Game 2.

Two Game 1 first inning errors led to an unearned run, with Lexi Klum adding an RBI single in the frame to give the visitors a quick 2-0 lead. An inning later, Kaila Mick and Maggie Buckholz laced RBI singles to double the lead, with a fifth inning Zoe Allen RBI single and a 2-run base hit from Mick capping the scoring.

In Game 2, Tech scored in five of the seven innings – taking advantage of two first inning errors to plate a run without a hit – while in the third, Addison Kachnik pushed the margin to 3-0 with a 2-run single.  Jayce Seavert got into the act in the fourth, lining an RBI single, while in the sixth, Allen led off with a triple and scored on a Mick base hit. The Lady Owls capped the scoring in the seventh on a Nita Cook RBI ground out.

Mick led the offense for the Owls, going 4-for-8 with four RBI on the day, with Buckholz and Seavert each posting 3-hit days.

Next weekend, OIT opens Cascade Conference play at home, hosting Corban University in a pair of doubleheaders.
