LACEY, Wash. – Quality starts from
Patrick Arman and
Lalo Barraza helped Oregon Tech complete a Saturday sweep of Saint Martin's University, claiming 5-2 and 5-1 victories at the SMU Baseball Field.
Both right-handers pitched six innings as the Hustlin' Owls (5-4) improved to 7-0 all-time against the Division II Saints.
Tech used a 10-hit attack in the opener – taking a 2-0 lead in the second on the strength of RBI singles from
Alonzo Vergara and
Brodie Marino. The Owls doubled the lead in the fourth, as Marino gapped a 2-run double – more than enough for Arman, who fanned six in earning his first win of 2023.
Marino finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI, with Vergara going 2-for-4 and freshman
Dane Bradshaw adding two hits, including a seventh inning RBI double.
Game 2 was a pitchers' duel between Barraza and the Saints (0-6) Justice Yamashida – Barraza allowing a run on three hits, but allowed a Dylan McLaughlin fourth inning RBI single – giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Yamashida struck out 12 and surrendered just one hit – but OIT made the most of the knock. Sixth inning walks to
Matthew Lehrbach, Vergara and Marino loaded the bases, with
Tyler Horner delivering Tech's first hit, a 2-run single, to give the Owls the lead.
Matthew Ortiz pushed the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Vergara added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double – scoring on back-to-back wild pitches.
"Good team day," said OIT head coach
Jacob Garsez. "In Game 1, our offense did a lot of good things and Pat gave us a quality start. Game 2 was very different, their starter was solid and we had to grind out a win. It was great to see Barraza bounce back and give us a quality start."
OIT closes out the series with SMU tomorrow with a 11:30 a.m. doubleheader.
