Hustlin' Owls Drop Doubleheader at No. 13-Ranked Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A 3-hit day from Matthew Ortiz was not enough for Oregon Tech, as the Hustlin' Owls dropped a doubleheader at No. 13-ranked Westmont College.

The Warriors (8-1) hit four home runs in the 13-3 and 7-3 victories at Russ Carr Field.

The hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 1, before the Owls (2-3) answered in the second – as Chad Leonard delivered a run with a sacrifice fly and Ka'ala Tam lined an RBI single to pull the visitors within 3-2.

While WC starter Bryan Peck fanned 10 OIT batters, the Warriors broke the game open behind Brady Renck, who smashed a 3-run second inning homer to extend the lead to 6-2, with the second baseman adding a 2-run single in a 6-run sixth inning.

Ortiz, Leonard and Brody Marino all had two hits for Tech, with Tam adding his second homer of the season in the eighth inning.  Both Cruz Hamilton and Trevor Thissell tossed a scoreless inning in relief for OIT.

Tech jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in Game 2, as Ortiz roped a 3-run homer. The Warriors countered with two runs in each of the first three innings – including 2-run homers from Ryan DeSaegher and Kaden Tsiji – taking the lead for good.

Landon Cheney threw 3.1 innings of one-run relief in the loss for OIT.

The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
