2022 Women's Soccer Notebook (Week 4)
Women's Soccer
COMING UP: vs. Southern Oregon, Friday, Noon.

WATCH LIVE: Fans unable to get to the Basin for Friday's match-up against Southern Oregon will be able to watch the game live on the Owls Sports Network with Mike Safford and Luke Roth calling the action. Live Stats will also be available through OIT's SIDEARM Stats Portal.

HOME WIN STREAK: Tech will put their 20-match home win streak and a 34-match home unbeaten streak on the line Friday. The Lady Owls are a combined 101-56-14 on their own pitch since 2000 and have not lost a contest in Klamath Falls since a 2017 setback to Eastern Oregon. Since the new field turf surface was installed on campus, the Owls are a combined 32-2-3 on their home pitch.

RIVALRY GAME: In 2000, both OIT and Southern Oregon began women's soccer as an intercollegiate sport – with both squads recording very similar win-loss records during the 23-year run (Tech is 201-172-28, with SOU 194-173-39). The head-to-head rivalry, however, has been slanted toward the Rogue Valley side, as the Raiders hold a 23-10-3 series lead – including a 5-11-2 record in the Basin. Southern handed the Owls their lone CCC loss in 2021 (a 2-1 decision in Ashland) – with Tech's last road win at Raider Stadium occurring in 2013. OIT, however, will take a 4-match home unbeaten streak against their rivals into Friday, as Southern has not topped the Owls in Klamath Falls since 2016. SOU is one of two teams (along with Corban) to play the Lady Owls in all 23 years of the program's existence.

OPPONENT PREVIEW – SOUTHERN OREGON: The Raiders (2-4-1, 1-1 CCC) have played a difficult preseason schedule – including a road win at The Master's – with all four of their losses coming by a one-goal margin. Defense has been solid for the Ashland 11, as All-CCC keeper Jessie Selby (1.00 GAA, .857) has shared time in 2022 with Ashlynn Hernandez (0.80 GAA, .778). A pair of All-CCC selections lead SOU in scoring – Sarah Mauk (2 goals) and Baylee Toney (1 goal, 1 assist) – with the duo combining to score eight goals with seven assists in 2021.

FOUR POINT TRIP: The Owls opened the 2022 Cascade Conference schedule with a win and a draw – topping Evergreen, 3-2, while playing Northwest to a 0-0 draw. It was the third time OIT has returned from the Puget Sound road swing with an unbeaten record, joining the 2009 and 2019 clubs that posted 2-0 marks on the trip.

400TH GAME: Last Friday's win at Evergreen marked the 400th women's soccer game played by the Lady Owls. Heading into Friday's match, Tech holds a 201-172-28 all-time record.

3 GOALS EQUALS A WIN: Friday's match at Evergreen marked the 112th time OIT has scored 3-or-more goals in a match – with the victory their 55th in a row when scoring three goals. The Owls have a combined 108-4 all-time record when reaching the 3-goal plateau, with the last loss coming in 2011 – a 7-4 loss to Linfield.

MILLER TIES RECORD: The Lady Owls turned to their senior leader at Evergreen, as Maddie Miller recorded the eighth brace of her OIT career in the 3-2 victory. Miller converted a penalty kick early in the second half to extend the Tech lead to 2-0, while providing the eventual game-winner – heading home a free kick from Karly White – midway through the period. It was the tenth game-winning goal for Miller, tying Cassidy Gosvener for No. 1 on the OIT career list.

WETZEL FINDS NET: The first goal of the road trip was a 25-yard dart off the right foot of Kiah Wetzell, her first goal of the 2022 season. The third-year player upped her career goal total to 11 – the 21st OIT player to record 11-or-more goals in a career.

NAKAMURA KEY IN GOAL: In Saturday's draw, Northwest fired 18 total shots at OIT keeper Sydni Nakamura – but did not find the back of the net. Nakamura made three saves in recording her second shutout of the season, becoming the 14th Lady Owl to record multiple shutouts in goal in a season.

0-0 DRAWS: The scoreless draw at Northwest marked the 15th time an OIT women's soccer game has ended without a goal scored and second time this season (Tech played Simpson to a 0-0 score in the season opener). In 2014 and 2018, the Owls played a pair of scoreless draws, while in 2019, three games finished with 0-0 scores.

AROUND THE CASCADE CONFERENCE: Following the first weekend of conference play, eight of the 13 teams sit without a loss, though Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho are the lone squads to open with a 2-0 record. Those two teams will head to Corban and Bushnell, while the remaining CCC games will be in Montana – as Northwest and Evergreen head to Providence and Rocky Mountain, with Warner Pacific and Multnomah traveling to Carroll.

RECORD BOOK WATCH: Senior Maddie Miller currently ranks among the career Top-10 in OIT history – ranking No. 1 in game-winning goals (10), No. 4 all-time in goals scored (29) and in total points scored (61). In addition, Sydni Nakamura ranks No. 8 all-time in shutouts (3).

NEW OVERTIME RULES: The 2022 season will feature a new set of rules for games tied at the end of regulation. Beginning this year, any regular-season match that is tied after 90 minutes will be declared a draw – no overtime period will be played. All postseason games that are tied after 90 minutes will feature two 10-minute overtime periods – that will be played out in its entirety – regardless of how many goals are scored. If the postseason overtime period ends in a tie, a penalty shootout will determine the team that advances.

LOOKING AHEAD: OIT continues their three-match string of home games, hosting Rocky Mountain (Sept. 30) and the University of Providence (Oct. 1).
