PENDLETON, Ore. –
Ashley Hart pulled Oregon Tech even in the second half, but a late minute strike from the University of Jamestown gave the Jimmies a 2-1 women's soccer victory over the Lady Owls at Blue Mountain Community College.
The match was moved 50 miles to the west due to wildfire smoke in the Grande Ronde Valley, with the North Dakota side taking a 1-0 first half lead on a Gabby Sarkis unassisted goal.
The Lady Owls (0-1-1) answered early in the second half, as Hart scored her first collegiate goal, taking a cross from
Jissel Valencia-Mendez and slotting home the 58th minute equalizer.
Both teams had chances to take the lead, but the Jimmies (1-2) got the winner in the 83rd minute, as Eve Hoppe drove home a one-timer of a counter-attack.
"We had a rough trip all around - with a few twists," said head coach
Tom Eichelkraut. "Having to make adjustments on the fly and it took us awhile to find our rhythm. Once we got going, we had our chances. We made a tactical decision to push forward for the win and that risk caught us - and Jamestown countered and scored the winning goal. The ladies responded and did everything I asked. This season is still a work in progress and we know Sunday is our last chance to get things right before conference play."
UJ had a slight 13-11 edge in shots and added a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Both keepers were active, as
Sydni Nakamura made five saves in the loss for OIT, while Tea Pence had six stopes for the visitors.
OIT returns to action on Sunday, hosting Menlo at 11 a.m.
